The world’s second-largest phone maker is now Huawei, and it has the top spot in its sights.

IDC and Strategy Analytics have released their latest smartphone shipment numbers, and the clear winner of the last few months has been China’s Huawei, at the expense of incumbent global leaders Samsung and Apple, both of which lost ground.

Huawei has been flirting with the position of world’s second-largest smartphone vendor for a while, having taken over from Apple for the first time in 2017, before switching back and forth in 2018. The company’s improvement in 2019, however, appears to set it up with a firmer control of the second spot: Huawei jumped from 39.3 million phones shipped in the first quarter of 2018 to 59.1 million shipments in Q1 2019, as noted by both IDC and SA.

Apple’s iPhone shipments shrunk from 52.2 million in the quarter last year to what’s estimated to be between between 36 and 43 million (Apple recently stopped reporting iPhone sales in its earnings reports) for the same period this year. Samsung went from 78.2 million shipments to 71.9 million. In fact, without Huawei’s burgeoning growth, the smartphone market might aptly be described as experiencing its own form of recession. US carriers AT&T and Verizon last week reported that smartphone upgrades among their subscribers are at record lows, and other Chinese phone makers like Xiaomi and Oppo are mostly just holding steady with their sales numbers.

Other global brands that used to have significant presence in the phone market are suffering too. Sony’s sales keep dwindling, and the company has said it intends to halve the staff it has working on its mobile business. LG last week quit making phones in its home country of South Korea, opting to lower costs by shifting production to Vietnam. And HTC is only technically still in the mobile business by virtue of producing that zany blockchain phone.

Huawei is the exception, and in more ways than one. The company has been very publicly rejected by the United States government, and it has zero presence in that highly lucrative and developed market. All of its progress over the past year has been in its home territory of China and through successful expansion of its business in Europe.

HUAWEI IS COMING FOR SAMSUNG’S CROWN

Over the course of the past two years, which has been a time when Apple and Samsung have contented themselves with mostly iterative updates, Huawei has consistently made huge strides between every device release. The company has invested heavily in its camera hardware, which has paid off with terrific performance (currently unmatched in low light) and has stirred smartphone owners to hit the “upgrade” button.

The goal for Huawei has always been to become the top smartphone vendor in the world, which seemed like overzealous optimism only a few months ago. As of today, it feels closer to an inevitability. Huawei forecasts it will get out ahead of Samsung by the end of this year, and if its aggressive rate of improvement continues, there’s little reason to doubt it’s capable of achieving that high goal.

Many american still buys Huawei, it is a myth of no American sales of Huawei smartphone.

I dare to bet many of these export set to America makes billions for Huawei and amazon. Both win win situation for China and America.

. .
The problem is that the vast majority of smartphone sales in the US happen through carriers.

If they allowed Huawei to compete on a even level then Apple would be destroyed.

Apple would not be destroyed in the US , lol. Huawei would steal some of their sales with their flagship spec midrange priced phones. Now they seem to be raising their prices. I will be honest if they were to sell on the US I would consider some of their phones, they're on a roll currently.

Huawei has no significan marketshare in the US.

Didn't Apple recently lose half a trillion dollars off their market capitalization, blaming sales in China for it?

Imagine the impact if they didn't ban Huawei in the US?

Anyway there is no way to know now, since Apple has stopped releasing sales numbers.

I think you need T-Mobile or AT&T to use one in the US. Lots of US based tech reviewers receive these phones for reviewing. They are good phones but like Uber will jack up prices in future. One+ is a really nice alternative for those who want flagship specs for a bargain. Sucks they only sell on AT&T and T-mobile .

As you stated most people go with phones offered by their cellphone company. If Huawei is not on the list they aren’t going to get much marketshare. Of course there is nothing stopping people from buying one on Amazon or something but only a tiny part of the market actually goes through the trouble of doing that.

Apple is not my preference but they still have a leading following in the US. Huawei would be competitive probably behind Apple and Samsung. Lots of that is due to it being a fresh brand that is innovating and pricing well. Over time that freshness factor will begin to level off.

Not when this provide unmatched night shot and superior zoom. Its worth the American effort to go thru this trouble. Dont underestimate Amazon sales. Its more than u think.

Well you live there so you probably know better than me.

But it's hard to say for sure since Apple is no longer confident enough to release sales numbers.

People see no need to upgrade, they will be hanging on to their old iPhones instead of buying new ones. There is no technological innovation there, whereas Huawei and Samsung are developing folding phones, in-screen fingerprint scanners, P30 Pro optical periscope zoom, reverse wireless charging, and countless other features.

Meanwhile Apple has ditched even the basic fingerprint scanner, and they don't even include a fast charger or a dongle in the box.

Well I'm an android guy and I prefer Android phones. Apple has brought change with the new iPhone 10 but before that they should have done more. Lots of people in the US use Apple computers as well and like pairing the phone with it. It is still very popular in the US.

A lot of people aren't upgrading because price of flagship phones are too high, they wait till the price comes down. Huawei would offer something fresh with more than compeititive pricing. They have a promising future though, their flagship phones are exciting and keep getting better. Samsung UI beats them, however, that's where they will need to catch up.
