Hu Is Formally Welcomed to U.S. (and White House is turned into a Chinatown)

Zhou was probably the only sensible person during Mao's reign of terror.

He was more humane but he was always pliable to Mao's will, so if you consider him sensible then by default you must find Mao's policies sensible during that period of collective idealogical madness.

History is rarely black and white.

No Deng without Mao first, enough said.
You spoke as if China did not have better choice for leadership at the time. Mao wrecked China's economic development with the Greate Leap Forward, was forced to step down and apologize. Instead of learning from his mistakes, he plotted behind the scene to regain power in Shanghai by mobilizing the students to kill "pests". In reality, he was brainwashing them into his puppets.

Just as Liu Shaoqi got the country back on the right track, Mao derailed the process by purging his political opponents with Cultural Revolution.

Some leader he is.

Anyone who did not bend to Mao's tyranical will be paid a swift visit by the Red Guards. Liu Shaoqi, Zhu De and Deng Xiaoping were all victims. Zhou saved what he could with what little he has. That's more much than enough I can say about Mao.

When you say no Deng without Mao, what you should say is no Deng without Zhou.

Everyone is entitled to their own reading of history, but yours I find lacks a bit of subtlety.

Mao was a successful military philosopher and a master manipulator of politics, I'll give him that. However, he was not what China needed after 1949. You can argue that he made mistakes, but that is covering up for him. He did what he did on purpose, and no amount of subtlety will hide that.

So Great Leap Forward and Cultural Revolution were not instigated by Mao's leadership, but simply social momentum? Are you attempting to be funny?

I still do not think you understand my implication. Your thought process is still stuck at the detail level and not at the analysis level.

At any level, Mao is a disaster for post-1949 China. You may want to cite that he managed to build a heavy industrial base, social infranstructures and developed some strategically imporant defence technologies under his regime, but that was because he had put down all of his potential rivals. Who is to say that such advancements could not have occured under someone else's leadership?

If you want to worship a scheming tyrant, that is your own doing. His death in 1976 was a long overdue welcome for the development of China, both socially and economically.

did they put up chinese lanterns or something? why did you say white house turned into a chinatown? what does that even mean?

I copy/paste the English translation from the Wiki My Motherland - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia with politically sensitive part highlighted.

1.
Chorus (This part seems not existing in the youtube)

A great river flows, its waves are wide and calm
The wind blows through the rice flowers, bearing fragrance to either shore
My home is right there by the water
I am used to hearing the punters' whistle
and seeing the white sails on the boats

Solo

A great river flows, its waves are wide and calm
The wind blows through the rice flowers, bearing fragrance to either shore
My home is right there by the water
I am used to hearing the punters' whistle
and seeing the white sails on the boats

Chorus

This is my beautiful motherland
The place where I grew up
In this expansive stretch of land
Wonderful landscape can be seen everywhere

2.

Solo

Young ladies's beauty are like flowers
Young men's hearts are big and determined
In order to usher in a new era
They've woken the sleeping mountains
And changed the face of the river

Chorus

This is my heoric motherland
The place where I grew up
In this stretch of ancient land
There is youthful vigour found everywhere

3.

Solo

Great mountains, great rivers and an amazing land
Every road is broad and wide
When the friends come, fine drink is offered
But if the wolves come
What greets them are the hunting rifles

Chorus

This is my strong motherland
The place where I grew up
On this stretch of warm and friendly land
The sunshine of peace is everywhere
