Wrong, the Princely states were always under the rule of someone else.
There were two major empires back in the day. The Mughal Empire and the Hindu empire which was pretty big too.

It would composed of many princely states with a Muslim empire and a Hindu empire some where in the Indian subcontinent. So India should regard Britain as the mother country and the queen the head of the state.
