HOW TO SURVIVE A HEART ATTACK WHEN ALONE

Let's say it's 6.15pm and you're going home (alone of course),
after an unusually hard day on the job. You're really tired, upset and frustrated. Su
ddenly you start experiencing severe pain in your chest that starts to drag out into your arm and up into your jaw. You are only about five miles from the hospital nearest your home. Unfortunately you don't kno
w if you'll be able to make it that far. You have been trained in CPR, but the guy that taught the course did not tell you how to perform it on yourself..!!

NOW HOW TO SURVIVE A HEART ATTACK WHEN ALONE..

Since many people are alone when they suffer a heart attack, without help, the person whose heart is beating improperly and who begins to feel faint, has only about 10 seconds left before losing consciousness.
However, these victims can help themselves by coughing repeatedly and very vigorously.
A deep breath should be taken before each cough, and the cough must be deep and prolonged, as when producing sputum from deep inside the chest.
A breath and a cough must be repeated about every two seconds without let-up until help arrives, or until the heart is felt to be beating normally again.
Deep breaths get oxygen into the lungs and coughing movements squeeze the heart and keep the blood circulating.
The squeezing pressure on the heart also helps it regain normal rhythm. In this way, heart attack victims can get to a hospital.

I think it is worth sharing...:agree:

i have also read about this thing somewhere in internet.but as a doctor i am quite skeptical whether this works. haven't read anywhere in the textbooks.so it might be one of the internet hoaxes.again i am not quite sure.

cardiac arrest has following management profile
call to local hospital to get help--->early CPR---->early defibrillation---->early advanced life support
since a non medical personal cannot do later 2 steps, first 2 steps are to be done.

The only thing that one can personally do is to take an Aspirin. I keep pressing my mom to take a baby Aspirin every time she flies but she refuses to budge .

Keep a strip of sorbitrate handy...

As a Doctor, i find method mentioned above doubtful ......
basic Cause of heart attack is reduced blood supply to heart itself......When you take deep breath the blood coming to heart will increase but On coughing as u say it will increase pressure in ur abdomen thereby increasing the pressure against which the heart has to pump the blood ..leading to more oxygen demand by heart itself in process worsening the damage already done ....
Best thing is to Calm done(Anxiety increase Heart rate) ....No Exertion (Coughing is an type of exertion) take deep breaths avoid hyperventilating (rapid breathing ) ...Get to hosp or Medical professional as soon as possible( this is difficult coz of the all adrenaline rushes into blood)

Usually ppl don't get massive attack in first time..... First attack is usually a warning attack which occurs during Exertion or Extreme emotions....PPl who got first attack shld keep there medication handy ANd ID card which mention there name ,emergency contact number & if possible number of the Doctor treating you ....

last resort is AED

PS:-
@ GSLV/ Karan feel free to comment on my post

Everyone shld know how to Give CPR And Heimlich Maneuver(for choking)

.
But the steps you have mentioned, will someone remember those when he is actually going through that extreme pain? I hope it never happens to anyone. God bless you all.

Keep a strip of sorbitrate handy...

Too interactive with the body and cannot be classified as a routine OTC medication.

A question to the doctors in here; What is the recommended age for getting extensive body checkups on an annual basis like you do with a dentist for your teeth? Not talking about an informal chat with a GP over coffee but echo cardiograms, stress tests, MRIs etc.

^^ @cyphercide
Males: Every five years
Females: Every three to five years (3 yr for mod-high risk pt)

there is no specific age to start monitoring ....depends of which category of risk you belong and your family h/o but usually after 40 yr

generally before 40 yr of age your annual visit to doctor is should suffice but follow his advice that's most imp

40...? What about pre-existing conditions? No accelerated course for soon-to-be 25 and closet hypochondriacs :P? There's something reassuring about getting a look over and I've no issues dropping my pants either .

On your routine check up your doctor will tell you the needed test to be done according to your symptoms/signs .....

what i said is that even a healthy 40 yr old shld get his full body chk up done ever 3-5 yr ....to diagnose certain condition at the very early stage ....

you seems to be very eager to drop your pant's........:azn::azn::P
