The insurgency is costing tens of billions to our economy. spending a couple of $billion on border security would only improve our economy.

the US DHS was - in principle - supportive of the idea to help with fencing; it was that bastard karzai who raised a hue and cry over it -- this was in 2008/09 period, when karzai was still considered useful and not ready to be discarded like a trash

afghans cried over any suggestion of "formalizing" the border with fences / trench etc. in fact to this day some of them still make noises

so the issue is financial, as well as political...given that fazlullah and TTP are there and given the Peshawar AP school atrocity i think political consideration should be given less attention

fortified check-posts, attack heli , better communication between post officer and able to call air support within minutes , quick response teams , with better weapons , and artillery support , proper identification of anyone going in or out of Pakistan , daily 2 shifts of heavy patrol , and mine those areas , which are only used by terrorists .

the new NADRA bio-metric cards are harder to counterfeit...civilian and military cooperation is a must here

Mate, i don't know about the surveillance system.... i don't believe any of these stuff. Terrorists always find ways to evade such systems. If you wait in defense, they will always come and strike you. Best way to deal with the terrorists is to strike their bases... which was done be the Turkish army in 1993-1995 in the leaderhip of legendary commander "Osman Pamukoğlu". He launched attacks against the terrorists mostly in their bases, he surrounded the mountains and slew them in hundreds in each operation....it took many years for PKK, to regain its strength again.

Fence and mine all accessible entry exit points along the border. Increase the number of border posts. 24 / 7 monitoring by land and air. Start visa regime for anyone wanting to enter pakistan or Afghanistan.

Other civilian border controls should be applied normally.

The cost of a single vehicle with these capabilities would be approx $4 million. 33 of these vehicles can provide eyes on the entire AF-PAK border at the cost of $150 million. In addition, Shahpar/Burraq with SAR GMTI radars can cover the hard terrain.

Such mobile border surveillance network can effectively secure the entire AF-PAK border while freeing the rest of the troops at the cost of approx $200 million.

$200 million is peanuts compared to the cost we are paying right now.

Cuts can be made by using domestic armoured vehicles.

We have hundreds of M113s in storage which can be upgraded and used to cover the gaps between the surveillance network for interception of infiltrating threats. HIT Dragoon, Muhafiz 3 and Buraq APC can be used where tracked vehicles are not appropriate.

More systems can be added if need be. There are always loopholes but if we can achieve 85% sucess rate then i'll call it a win. The terrain much better than Siachin.

A $4 million vehicle can surely protect itself from an RPG. You can always add a Hard kill APS.

With economic reforms and by securing the LoC, the Indians have successfully contained the insurgency in IoK.

Even if this costs us a $1 billion, it will be worth it.
