At 6:30 I love how this minister’s brutally honest expression that he is disgusted by how far back Pakistan has fallen behind its competitors.

You are right, we need stability for as long as possible to get the breathing space to develop.

I hope he sends Pakistanis to Germany to study the mittlestand’s top 100 companies; 11% growth in 2018, and the mittletech companies grew at 11.8% in 2018. Considering how behind we are, and how unproductive our industries are, with real reform, we could achieve what Turkey did under Erdogan in the twenty years of his government. Double the GDP per capita.

Iftikhar and Justice Nisar--responsible for a lot of damage to Pakistan's economy. I am not going to go too far and accuse these judges of corruption. I have no evidence. This is why a large part of China’s success was destroying the “Iron Rice Bowl”. At best public-private partnerships is the way to go. With strict contract law dictating the terms of business and government interference.

While I agree with the thrust of your argumant about stability but Musharaf was a abject failure in the final cost/benefit analysis. He was responsible for -

• giving away Afghanistan to India in 2001 under US pressure. While I am first to agree that saying "no" to superpowers is not healthy but that does not mean you throw your naked ar*se to USA at the first prompt with legs trembling. There are many shades of grey. He cravenly gave away Afghanistan. He should have said "yes" but then placed some 'conditions" and if needed even sent in Pak SSG with US special forces to secure Pakistan's interests. US could go all out for OBL and AQ but Pak would guard her interests in Kabul. It has taken 19 years with massive suffering by Pakistan to finally see the change in Islamabad's favour. The loss of Afghanistan to Indian influence, the soill of WOT into Pakistan';s North West, the loss of Swat, the terrible destruction and US drone attacks in FATA was his legacy. In addition Pakistan was hypenated with terrorism causing this country untold damage in global perception from which it still has NOT recovered.
• for all this loss Musharaf got few billions in aid and loan adjustments which he used to spend in few large cities including Karachi creating artificial good times. They were artificial because he failed to carry out any major re-structuring which mean't when the money supply dried from USA Pakistan would sink again as it did. Meaning when it rained money instead of usng that money to restructure he used to to give urban middle classes in large cities good times which they still look back. Fcuk rest of the country or the North West which was destroyed by war.
• Musharaf had come on the basis of fixing the corrupt Nawaz and the corrupt system. He did neither. He was a dictator and that implies everything bad. But it does have ONE benefit. He could have used his dicatorship to erase the corrupt ruling elite including Nawaz. This is why he said he launched the coup which is a extra-constitutional act. However instead of using his power he sent Nawaz on holiday tus undoing the very justification of his illegal coup.
• Musharaf then practically handed over parts of Pakistan and federal government to the terrorist mafia otherwise known as MQM with known links to Indian RAW headed by Altaf. Karachi in fact was handed over to a Indian proxy Altaf. Can you imagine Imran Khan handing over Pesahwar to Achakzai of PMA? Or having federal ministries ran by PMA minsters? This is what Musharaf did with MQM Altaf.
• Musharaf totally failed to see the power deficit issue and take steps to resolve it leading to the massive shortages the country went through causing untold damage to the economy.
• finally he retarded the democractic evolution of Pakistan and his coup merely recharged Nawaz and Zardari to come back for second phase of looting from which the country has still not recovered.

Donald Trump did a stunning job getting 74 million American votes including about 24% of minorities voting for him--a huge Republican turnaround. An individual like Sattar Edhi made a huge contribution in easing some of the pains in a poor country like Pakistan.

When Nawaz Sharif came to NY for the UN general assembly, I tried to chase down his limo to give him a copy of the “Pakistan Flood Control System” (a presentation given to WAPDA in 2011 during the PPP government) designed by someone I don’t know, but I was just hoping he would look at it, for the sake of the country.

I never caught up to his limo, ran a few blocks to try to catch up, but he was making a U-turn on Park ave. And 50th street and sped away.

I hope they read this forum, and see the depth of our hopes for the nations development. Maybe this is the way the government will hear you and me. When Nawaz Sharif came to NY for the UN general assembly, I tried to chase down his limo to give him a copy of the “Pakistan Flood Control System” (a presentation given to WAPDA in 2011 during the PPP government) designed by someone I don’t know, but I was just hoping he would look at it, for the sake of the country.

I will respond to you and @Indus Pakistan later about Musharraf's role. I will say that I too was one of those in 2008 who thought Justice Iftikhar was upright and that Musharraf had to go. But, like the PTI ministers, I admit I was wrong about many things happening in 2008. Hindsight is 20/20, as they say. But we are blind if we don't learn even from hindsight!!

I have mixed feelings about Musharraf. As I said above, by 2008, I too was ready to see his back. But I don't agree with most of your post above about him.
1) In Sept. 2001, USA was raging bull! And Pakistan being the chief patron of the Taliban govt would have been a prompt target if any dithering was done. India had publicly offered everything to America to help in Afghanistan. EVERYTHING! There was going to be an assured destruction of Pakistan in case of a non substantial cooperation. The topic of what Pakistan could have gotten in return was discussed then. And it was the opinion of most in Pakistan that Pakistan should salvage whatever it could. Jang's late Irshad Ahmad Haqqani, an eminent journalist of his era, wrote about that. But despite the odds, Musharraf did get some concessions out of America. United States would have carpet bombed Pakistan then in case of non-compliance.

2) Bringing Nawaz/Zardari back--well, they ARE part of Pakistan's political system and fair and square won the 2013/2008 elections. You can't stay that Musharraf stifled democracy and yet in the same post deny the major political parties their role. Musharraf govt was greatly weakened because of the Judges Movement and the Lal Masjid backlash by 2008 and he just had to go. He saw PPP as the lesser evil and left. Remember: Even a towering leader like Ayub Khan had to leave office. Pakistani people don't tolerate leaders for long. Pakistan had never been a hard state like the Al Assads or the Ayatollahs of Iran or the Jordanian monarchy where thousands would be slaughtered by the security forces.

3) MQM... You ask the people of Karachi and they still think that under MQM' mayor Mustafa Kamal and Musharraf, the city of Karachi was much better. Altaf Hussain and his foreign connections don't matter much in Karachi. The people of Karachi are the staunchest Pakistanis and a turncoat like Altaf and his machinations would go only so far. He is a discredited bastard in the eyes of the people of Karachi. But I don't see a guilt-by-association here with Musharraf/Mustafa Kamal.

4) Yes, Musharraf could have done better in the power sector. I don't know much about that. I'd say he should have built the Kalabagh Dam.

Anyway, this topic is about how self-serving politicians of Pakistan have derailed Pakistan's progress and the OP video of Fawad Chaudhry is a good starting point for that discussion.
