In previous time there were imperial chess game concerning territorial acquisition with no nationalistic sentiment among the population which is currenly very outdated.So histoty of Russian imperial conquest is not relevant to the 21st century reality.Modern nation state take their territorial integrity very seriously and no large scale forceful boundary change is possible without inviting large scale war.Nazi Germany tried that in during ww2 and all we know the fate of them.

In Ukraine, the ministers are changing very quickly. So nobody know all of them.

New Russia has all the prospects to stay industrially and scientifically developed region only after separating from the former Ukraine. I had no negative opinion against Russia until Crimea seizure.That seizure remind me the Nazi seizure of Sudetenland and Austria.Both were ethnic German populated area bordering Germany.You just can't occupy a portion of other country on excuse of protecting the ethnic keens.That was the Nazi tactics.And it give a very dangerous precedence for powerful country to seize territory of weaker one.What happen earlier happened, but after ww2 with UN in place,this kind of muscle flexing is not tolerable.It is also a very bad incidence for the concept of collective security and nuclear non proliferation.

Russia should have kept patience during the last year's Ukraine uprising.If Russia had not intervened in Ukraine,there might have a chance of new Ukrainian leadership pursued a comparatively neutral policy.But with Crimea seizure and supporting donbas rebels Russia lost that possibility.Now under intense pressure,Ukraine is intensely pushing for NATO,EU membership.Not only that,all of the European countries particularly those bordering Russia now alarmed by the Russian move and taking a long term strategy of vast military build up along Russian border.They are literary inviting American military presence in the Russian backyards.So,Putin may have gained Crimea but he lost Ukraine forever along with other European neighbors.But Crimea will ultimately prove very costly for Russia in the long run.

Prior to the coup in Ukraine, sponsored by the West, in Ukraine was no separatism. More precisely, it was, but at the household level, at the level of dreams in the kitchen.
If the West did not support the Neo-Nazis Banderovites, Crimea and Donbass were still in Ukraine.
I say again - at least half the population of Ukraine look at West as an eternal enemy-oppressor. In the south and east of former Ukraine this point of view share majority of residents. Therefore, anti-constitutional coup was seen as blatant act of aggression. West provoked this crisis, not Russia.
But what will you do with the fact that most people in the South and East of former Ukraine really want to be a part of Russia, or at least - simply independent from the fascist regime in Kiev?
We could split peacefully as Czechs and Slovaks. And now it is still possible to avoid more blood simply by making democratic plebiscite.
