A strong central authority seems pretty unlikely for a nation as diverse as ours, probably why communism never took hold in our politic.The balance of powers between the centre and the states was built keeping this very fact in mind.

Our system is based upon giving voices to the many, that's how our founding fathers designed it, that's how we have stayed together for 70+ years. Conversely it slows down decision making immensely.
