How did China transform from a poor country into the world's second largest economy?

Scholars say Taiwan was responsible for China's modernization.

Taiwan's Impact on China: Why Soft Power Matters More than Economic or Political Inputs

"[Taiwan] constituted a major contribution to China's economic modernization and rise ...

...what the Taiwanese did was essentially to transfer manufacturing from Taiwan to the Mainland."

You are right and Martian is right. It is the money of overseas Chinese from TW, HK, Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia. It is more or less only TW that transfers the technology. Plus, the technology from the West because China demands in the early phase all foreign companies to establish joint ventures. Chinese are masters in studying and copying things. One prime example is Germany train technology when you buy only one piece and copy in multiple times.

HK has no technology but capital. In many cases the latter is more important because you can buy technology.
China has a policy that foreign investers have to have a Chinese partner to set up a businiess in China, thus making the technological transfer a precondition.

"No foreign firm can have access to China’s market unless it shares its technology with a Chinese partner, which most American firms are willing to do."http://www.weeklystandard.com/how-china-beats-america-in-5-easy-steps/article/2009985

You can't buy advanced technology.

The United States blocked China's purchase of Lattice Semiconductor, a manufacturer of FPGA.

Logic-chip design is more advanced than FPGA.

The basis of China's modern industrial might rests on Taiwanese high-technology. You can't buy it.

That Haidian guy is a complete idiot.

He thinks that America's imposition of sanctions on China after 1989 for Tiananmen Square helped to modernize China.

It wasn't US sanctions and it wasn't Hong Kong city.

It was mighty industrial-power Taiwan that modernized China.

Taiwan's full wealth and technological power were used to industrialize China.

If it was merely Hong Kong, India would be modernized today from its finance-center Mumbai.
China is,still not modernized yet, keep saying u r independent makes u an Enemy!

yeah,台湾这么牛叉,进联合国啊,独立国家怎么不进联合国!!!不要来大陆发展,我们太落后,没有机会的!

China has no experience or know-how in manufacturing DRAM computer chips.

What does China do?

China hires a Taiwanese expert to solve the problem. Taiwan has decades of experience with DRAM memory chips.

No matter which way you look, it is always Taiwan at the source of advanced technology for China. The United States will block any country that attempts to transfer DRAM technology to mainland China. Taiwan is not a country and there's no way to control Taiwanese experts. The United States cannot levy sanctions on the experts of a non-country.

Hence, Taiwan is still a crucial source of advanced technology for China today. This has been true since 1978.

China today is a different player as it was in the 1980s. The West is wary. True you can't buy core technology but in many cases you only need to access to the basics and develop from there.

If you are an engineer you will understand what I mean.

Did you read the thread title?

It says "How did China transform from a poor country into the world's second-largest economy?"

The answer is still Taiwan.

America's Intel and South Korea's Samsung manufacture technology-simplistic memory chips on mainland China.

Taiwan's TSMC is introducing 16nm logic-chip production in 2018.

Taiwan is still pushing the frontiers of technology into China.

Car manufacturing is medium-tech and not worth discussing. Everybody knows how to manufacture a car. Even the Indians know how.

Who provided the money for China's modernization? Taiwan earned its trade surpluses from the world and funded China's modernization.

What technology did Taiwan provide to China? LCD, LED, logic-chip manufacturing, 3G and 4G (via MediaTek), machine-tool technology, solar panel manufacturing, specialty chemicals, etc.

The claims that Hong Kong was responsible for China's modernization is silly. No city can modernize China. It was technological powerhouse Taiwan with its wealth that accomplished China's modernization in 40 years.
u keep saying this i am keeping buy huawei, hey how is HTC doing

No. The West never helped China.

After 1989's Tiananmen Square, the US imposed sanctions on China.

For years after 1989, the only people investing in China were Taiwanese. Only the Taiwanese were willing to transfer technology to China, because Taiwanese are ethnically Chinese.

Everybody else wanted to wait until Taiwan transferred the technology then they were willing to bring in equivalent technology. Taiwan always moved first. Then the South Koreans matched Taiwan's technological level. Afterwards, the Europeans. Usually dead last were the Americans.

Taiwan will be first next year in China with 16nm semiconductor logic-chip manufacturing technology. Taiwan is still first. Other countries will follow, but Taiwan is the first to bring advanced technology into China and train mainland Chinese engineers.

Taiwan has been keeping China at the forefront of technology for decades. It is still happening today in logic-chip semiconductor technology, DRAM memory chip manufacture, and 4G broadband cellular network technology (Taiwan's MediaTek has the technology and China's Spreadtrum doesn't). Advanced technology flows from Taiwan to mainland China.

You overstate the role of TW. The Taiwanese are a major player on the mainland but you should not oversee the roles of the West with the Germans making huge investments in China. The contributions of the Koreans, the Japanese etc. the sanctions imposed after 1989's Tiananmen Square are mostly related to military hardware.

No, I am exactly right. There is a long list of Taiwanese technological transfers to China.

The South Koreans and Japanese would never help China industrialize.

South Korea's Samsung manufactures simplistic memory chips on mainland China. It does not manufacture advanced logic chips. Only Taiwan's TSMC does that.

Fifteen years ago, China offered free land and electricity to Toyota for a car manufacturing plant. Toyota said no.

The South Koreans and Japanese only bring in technology to China after Taiwan has introduced it. There is no gain to China when Taiwanese technology is already present. South Korea and Japan would never help their competitor China to advance technologically. It would be suicidal economically for South Korea and Japan. China has enormous scale. If South Korea or Japan helped China technologically, they would drive themselves out of business.

The claim that South Korea and Japan helped China industrialize is inherently stupid. Koreans and Japanese are very tight-fisted with their technological know-how. Both South Korea and Japan are tiny countries and their survival depends on having a technological advantage. This does not apply to Taiwan, because Taiwanese see themselves as ethnically Chinese. Transferring technology to other ethnic Chinese is logical.

South Korea and Japan have to listen to the United States. The United States would never allow South Korea and Japan to help China advance technologically. Many of the South Korean and Japanese technologies are licensed from the United States and cannot be transferred into China without an explicit export license from the United States government.

In contrast, Taiwan transfers whatever it feels like. The technology belongs to Taiwan. Taiwan innovated all of the improvements to notebook computers and has a dominant 90% worldwide market share.

One million to two million Taiwanese are still working on mainland China today. The army of Taiwanese experts and engineers were the bedrock of China's industrialization.

The number of South Koreans and Japanese in China is trivial.

Taiwan brought a mountain of technology into China. None of it was South Korean or Japanese.

Taiwan's long list of technological transfers to China: Digital camera manufacture, notebook computers, machine tools, solar panels, LCD displays, LEDs, specialty chemicals, 3G and 4G broadband cellular network technology, logic-chip technology, and plenty others (such as Taiwan's Andes Technology CPU design).

It's all Taiwan.

The foundation of this transformation was laid in Mao era through land reforms, social revolution, universal education, industrialization, and most importantly, one-party political system.

Deng was standing on the shoulder of a giant, and his reform was based on the material and political dividends of pre-reform era.

The early investments from Overseas Chinese and Japanese after 1978 were the catalyst that expedited the development.

China is an unique case of social development that can't be copied by or transplanted to any country in foreseeable future.

South Korea could not have helped China advance in LCD display technology, because South Korea's LG stole it from Taiwan's AUO (AU Optronics).

There are four critical patents involved in the manufacture of LCD displays. Those patents belong to Taiwan's AUO. South Korea's LG stole Taiwan's four patents and illegally used Taiwan's technology in the manufacture of LG LCD displays.

Taiwan is the innovative powerhouse. This is true in LCD displays, notebook computers, logic-chip manufacturing, 3G and 4G broadband cellular network technology, etc. Taiwan became a world leader in manufacturing advanced electronics and semiconductors, because Taiwan invented these technological improvements.

South Korea steals a lot of Taiwanese technology and gets sued from time to time. Samsung has settled legally with Taiwan's ITRI for stealing Taiwanese technology.

Hence, China did not obtain its technology from South Korea. South korea was stealing some of its technology from Taiwan.

Another example is Samsung hiring the former head of TSMC R&D. Samsung's 14nm technology strongly resembled TSMC's 16nm arrowhead integrated-circuit connector design. Samsung is lucky it hasn't been sued by TSMC, because Samsung is also a TSMC customer and the technological theft had no real impact on TSMC sales.

China also did not obtain its technology from Japan, because Japan has been defeated by Taiwan in advanced semiconductors and electronics.

This leaves Taiwan as the source of China's advanced technology for advanced semiconductor and electronics manufacturing.

China downgraded to A1 by Moody's on worsening debt outlook
[HONG KONG] Moody's Investors Service cut its rating on China's debt, in a challenge to the view that the nation's leadership will be able to rein in debt while maintaining the pace of economic growth.

Moody's reduced the rating to A1 from Aa3 and changed the outlook to stable from negative, the company said in a statement on Wednesday. It cited the likelihood of a "material rise" in economy-wide debt and the burden that will place on the state's finances.

The offshore yuan dipped after Moody's downgrade, weakening 0.07 per cent to 6.8850 per dollar as of 9.04am in Shanghai. The Australian dollar fell as much as 0.31 per cent after the announcement about its largest trading partner.

President Xi Jinping and other top leaders are seeking to rein in credit risks in the financial system, while ensuring there's enough lending to keep the economy humming above their target for economic growth of at least 6.5 per cent this year. Total outstanding credit climbed to about 260 per cent of GDP by the end of 2016, up from 160 per cent in 2008, according to Bloomberg Intelligence.
