How China Practices the Invasion of Taiwan
Recent Chinese military maneuvers in the Bashi Channel had only one purpose.

The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) has recently been practicing the invasion of Taiwan with a number of joint air-sea military exercises in and around the Bashi Channel, in close proximity to Taiwanese territory.

As I reported last week (see: “China Holds Naval Drills Near Taiwan and Philippines”), the most recent exercise involved the simulation of real combat conditions in the waters east of the Bashi Channel, including long-range precision strikes and aerial combat.

According to IHS Jane’s Defense Weekly, the Chinese naval task force consisted of a Type 052B destroyer, a Type 054A frigate — side note: two ships of this class also recently participated in a joint Sino-Russian maritime exercise – and a Type 904 general stores issue ship.

The People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) deployed a number of H-6G/K strategic bombers and J-11B air superiority fighter jets. The H-6K can carry six KD-20 land attack cruise missiles as well as “a wide range of new precision-guided munitions available from four Chinese weapon manufacturers,” IHS Jane’s Defense Weekly states.

The article also discussed a PLA Daily review of another naval drill — a mobility exercise involving a 20,000-ton civilian roll-on/roll-off (ro-ro) ferry, which was seconded to the PLAAF Transportation Department, and transported troops and vehicles from the Bohai to the South China Sea. IHS Jane’s Defense Weekly summarized the rationale behind this move:

To compensate for the relatively small size of its formal naval amphibious transport fleet the PLA has co-funded construction of a large number of ferries used by civilian companies. They will be made available to the PLA during emergencies and are a frequent element in civil-military transport exercises.

Additionally, IHS Jane’s points out that the PLA Daily article included an officer giving a briefing with a map that resembled Taiwan. The article also notes that China might be capable of moving eight to 12 divisions to Taiwan in the event of war. However, as a 2014 U.S. Department of Defense report emphasizes:

Large-scale amphibious invasion is one of the most complicated and difficult military operations the PLA might pursue in a cross-Strait contingency. Success would depend upon air and sea superiority, rapid buildup and sustainment of supplies on shore, and uninterrupted support. An attempt to invade Taiwan would strain China’s armed forces and invite international intervention …. China does not appear to be building the conventional amphibious lift required to support such a campaign.

Back in January, the PLA also announced that it will double the number of its Amphibious Mechanized Infantry Divisions (AMID) from two to four (see: “China Just Doubled the Size of Its Amphibious Mechanized Infantry Divisions”). Total manpower in the AMIDs will soon be around 52,000 – 60,000, up from 30,000. These new amphibious forces are meant to complement the roughly 20,000 strong elite PLA Marine Corps in future conflicts with Taiwan.

Yet the DoD study also puts this in perspective:

The PLA is capable of accomplishing various amphibious operations short of a full-scale invasion of Taiwan. With few overt military preparations beyond routine training, China could launch an invasion of small Taiwan-held islands in the South China Sea such as Pratas or Itu Aba. A PLA invasion of a medium-sized, better defended offshore island such as Matsu or Jinmen is within China’s capabilities.

No need for war. More and more Taiwanese are moving to the mainland to work and live. I personally know plenty of them.

More young Taiwan people willing to work on mainland

TAIPEI - More young Taiwan's job seekers are willing to work on the mainland, according to a survey released on Wednesday.

The survey, conducted in the first quarter of 2014 by the Taiwan human resources firm 104 Media among 2,196 Taiwan people who graduated in the past three years, showed that more than 80 percent of the respondents are willing to work on the mainland, a higher rate than that in 2012.

Respondents with mainland work experience have a stronger willingness to head for the mainland, and Shanghai, Beijing, Guangdong Province, Jiangsu Province, Fujian Province and Chongqing Municipality are the most-favored locations for young Taiwan job seekers, the survey found.

Good salary and benefits, the vast mainland market and rich personal experience were the top three reasons cited, and the income of young Taiwan people working on the mainland is 1.25 times higher than that of young people on the island. In 2012, the figure was 1.03, according to the survey.

The survey also showed that with more communication across the strait, more than 50 percent of those surveyed would date and marry a mainlander.

Chang Ya-hui, manager of 104 Media public affairs office, said that 245,000 people, or 4.5 percent of the company's job hunters, indicated their hope to work on the mainland as well as Hong Kong and Macao, up 22.4 percent from five years ago.

War will occur when Taiwan declares their independent. We are just preparing for any possible scenario considering election is coming up in Taiwan 2016.

Tell me something Taiwan already has a separate government, a military of their own, than why is China only looking for a formal independence declaration by Taiwan?

Because in our constitution and Taiwan constitution remain "One China". Nobody in the UN recognized Taiwan as an independent country. So it is important that we need to see a formal declaration before we can use the Anti-Secession Law.

LOL
history is hard for coldwar people
Even they are living in coldwar now
The civil war between People Republic of China(PRC)and Republic of China(Roc)started in 1945, and still continue today

Technically the civil war was had never ended; instead put in the back burner or "freeze" with the adoption of the "One China" policy on both sides. This allow us to give Taiwan an opportunity to run their country freely but in return their official sovereignty status remains under China. Everybody in the world recognize this and we accept this status as a compromise.

I am aware of this however what i wanted to say was that Taiwan more or less is independent, they have defence pacts with the US, buys weapons from them, even an embassy there (If i am not wrong), Why is a than a formal independence declaration needed for China to forcefully reunite the island? Why wait?

On a side note what are the taiwense people take on all of this? With China's massive economy it would be hard for them to resist the unification with the main land.

I think You misunderstood my intentions for something else. Believe me as a Pakistani nothing would rejoice me than Taiwan re-uniting with China.

Because we promise them in 1992 that we will use peaceful mean to reunify. That is our prefer method. Pretty much this is a promise we made to the World as a compromise and our resume diplomacy with the West as well. So we can't attack unless they declare independence. Recognition by international community is very important. Eastern Ukraine is more or less already independent but they don't have any seat in the UN and cannot formally sign diplomatic agreement with anyone.

.
What is invasion ?The American invasion of California, the Indonesian invasion of Jakarta?First of all, each of the countries that have diplomatic relations with the government of China's legitimate government, PRC, recognize that Taiwan is part of China.
Second, several countries without diplomatic relations, do not recognize, So what?
I know that some countries do not want China to be unified, so that even the basic historical facts have to be tampered , ha ha.No sense.
It will only make us see the foreigners face, so as to strengthen our faith.hhaa

Between Mainland of China and TaiWan, there will be no WAR ... coz TaiWan's economy can't leave mainland and more Taiwanese come to mainland.

The only possible is Taiwan announce to be an independent state, whatever KMT or DPP won't coz they clearly knew war with mainland of China is not good to TaiWan and can't win. They wish to maintain present status ... but the time with Mainland side, without war it's just a time problem to reunify China. It's the good way to both Mainland and Taiwan ppl ... here we r just waiting.

Just in case to Taiwan independence, China has PLAN-B ... but i think we don't need them in future.:no:
