Millions of Chinese cram onto trains to make the annual pilgrimage home for the Lunar New Year holiday. It is a crowded and often uncomfortable experience that is rapidly being transformed by the country’s push into the world of high-speed rail.

China already has the globe’s longest bullet-train network, but it is ploughing 3.5 trillion yuan (US$556 billion) into expanding its railway system by 18 per cent over the next two years, to 150,000km, or more than 93,000 miles.

Much of that will be spent on extending the high-speed network westward, which includes parts of the country that ancient Chinese poet Li Bai once lamented were so mountainous that getting there was as challenging as reaching the sky.

Why millions in China won’t return home for Lunar New Year holiday

Almost 400 million people – that is more than the US population – will travel by train over the Lunar New Year, also known as Spring Festival. China’s factories and offices shut down for the week-long holiday, which unleashes the largest migration of humans on the planet. Many of the country’s 1.4 billion citizens return to their hometowns for family gatherings, or, increasingly, are taking the chance to be tourists both at home and abroad.

While the advent of cut-price flights has dimmed the appeal of rail travel in other parts of the world, in China it is on the rise. Last Spring Festival saw a record 10.96 million trips on one day, and for the first time more people took bullet trains than conventional ones, according to official data.

Almost non-existent in China a decade ago, high-speed rail has exploded, with more than half of the 25,000km network built between 2013 and 2017. The plan is to expand it by more than 50 per cent by 2025, with eight main bullet-train lines running from east to west by 2030. China intends to have another eight main lines running from north to south as well.

That will open up the network – which was initially focused on setting up high-speed connections in major economic hubs along China’s wealthier east coast – to the less developed west.

“These lines provide ample capacity during peak travel periods such as the Lunar New Year and in other times can stimulate growth in tourism and other businesses in the service sector in western China,” said Sun Zhang, a railway expert at Tongji University in Shanghai. “High-speed rail will help to bridge economic imbalances between China’s east and west.”

The latest of the westward bullet-train lines opened in December, and connects Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province, to Xian, a city in China’s northwest famed for the terracotta warriors.

With a top speed of 250km/h, the high-speed rail cuts through the region’s mountainous terrain in a quarter of the time taken by a regular train. The cost – which starts at 263 yuan (US$42) for a single-trip ticket – is about half that of a one-way flight.

Chen Gaozhi, a businessman who lives in Xian, will travel the route this week. He is taking a high-speed train back to his hometown in Sichuan just days ahead of the New Year holiday, which starts on Thursday.

“I’ve always flown back home during the Lunar New Year over the past 10 years, but 70 to 80 per cent of the time the flights would get delayed,” Gaozhi said. “The worst experience was four years ago when I had a flight back to Xian after the New Year scheduled at six in the afternoon, but the plane didn’t take off until midnight.”

This Spring Festival, people are expected to make an estimated 390 million rail trips in the 40 days starting February, the typical travel period for the holiday. That is up 8.8 per cent from a year earlier, and almost double the 200 million trips made in 2010. Four of the eight high-speed lines going from east to west are already in operation.

The last time Gaozhi took a train back for the holiday was when he was in college, and it took more than 16 hours. This time, he said, “it’ll only take three hours for me to go home”.

The world's largest migration has changed due to China's high-speed rail

International Online Zhuangao: According to the U.S. Bloomberg News Agency reported on February 12, every year during the Spring Festival, millions of Chinese crowded in the train on the return of the Chinese New Year, which is a crowded and uncomfortable experience, And this situation is being changed by the rapid development of China's high-speed rail. At present, China already has the longest high-speed train network in the world. In the next two years, China will also invest 3.5 trillion yuan (about 556 billion U.S. dollars) to expand its railway system 18% to 150,000 kilometers. A large part of this investment will be used to expand the high-speed rail network to the west of China, including the area where "ancient Chinese dilemma is difficult to ascend" where Chinese ancient poet Li Bai once lamented.

This year's Spring Festival, China is expected to have 400 million trips by rail, an increase of 8.8% from a year earlier and almost double the number of 200 million in 2010. This total is more than the United States population and is the largest population migration in the world.

During the Spring Festival, nearly 1.4 billion Chinese will return home to celebrate the festive season with their families. Many people choose to go out for tourism. In the rest of the world, the advent of cheap flights has lessened the appeal of rail travel. However, in China, rail travel has increased unabated. Official statistics show that during the Spring Festival last year, there were records of 10.96 million passengers on single-day rail transport, while the number of travelers taking high-speed rail exceeded for the first time more than ordinary trains.

Ten years ago, there were few high-speed railways in China, but over half of the 25,000-kilometer railways completed between 2013 and 2017 were high-speed railways. China plans to expand the high-speed rail network by 50% by 2025 and by 2030 realize eight high-speed railway lines going east and west. China also plans to open another 8 high-speed rail lines from north to south. This will further open up China's high-speed rail network and connect China's richer eastern coastal region with the economically underdeveloped western region.

Sun Zhang, a railroad expert at Tongji University in Shanghai, said: "During the peak travel season such as the Spring Festival, these high-speed rail lines can provide sufficient capacity and at other times they can stimulate the growth of tourism and other industries in western China. High-speed rail will help ease the economic imbalance between eastern and western China. "

China's newest western high-speed rail line opened in December 2017, connecting Chengdu, capital of Sichuan province, with Xi'an, a city in northwestern China. The high-speed rail line runs at a speed of 250 kilometers an hour, with a quarter of the way up the mountain. One-way fares for 263 yuan (about 42 US dollars), about one-way ticket is half.

Chen Gaozhi, a businessman who lives in Xi'an, will return to his hometown of Sichuan this week by taking the train. He said: "I've been flying home during the Lunar New Year for the past 10 years, but most of the time the plane lagged behind. The worst experience was that four years ago I should have taken the New Year The plane returned to Xi'an at 6 o'clock in the evening and the plane took off at midnight. "The last time Chen went back to train was when he went to college, it took more than 16 hours. This time, he will only need three hours to go home.

1)It used to takes me 8 hours to go back hometown from Jiangsu to Anhui province and now 2.6 hours only but still hard to get one ticket coz too much buying requests especially during the transport of Spring Festival, but on the other hand it make the Shanghai Beijing line the very profitable one and it is good for further R&D and maintaince as well as railway expansion.
2)USA CNN said that China's high-speed rail is a huge waste and China's investment in high-speed rail can never be profitabile, the results is: last year, China Railway Group received a net profit of 1.076 billion yuan RMB .
3)High-speed rail is not only profitable in China, but it also brings benefits to the quality of ordinary people life, economy, politics, national defense, military affairs and culture and so on.....
4) Not every country is suitable for building high-speed rail.
India and Indonesia are more suitable but money request is immense so be prepared to sell your blood my freind.............
5)If high-speed rail can not be used at high frequencies, it will be a huge waste. China, with a population of 1.4 billion, does not have this problem.
