The authors concern is about sexualizing characters portraying village girls. Most of the Indian population lives in the rural area where mix of male and female remains a taboo to this day. I don't think she was blaming anyone but hinting that Bollywood could play a constructive role.
Bollywood, or the Indian Film Industry, is afterall an industry. An industry produces that product that sells the most. The other day, I was bombarded with some data by one my friend, whom we affectionately call Sardar. He says that movies like Ragini MMS 2 had actually made more money than movies like Barfi.
Now, how do you define which one is a better movie ? Ragini MMS 2,the off-the-grindhouse spook thriller starring a pornstar or Barfi, that depicts the life of a mute-dumb young man in Darjeeling who has the rights to grow up and be a part of the society just like anybody else ?
You may be one of those intellectuals, who likes movies with strong messages or you may be one of those who just wants to see a half naked **** star screaming at a ghost.
In the end, it does not matter.People will see what they want to see.Bollywood, is an industry and it produces what people want to see, it does not try to sell reality or try to bring about a revolution or something of that sort.
One should be prudent enough to place his expectations in the right place.
