I lived an worked in Mainland. I know how it is. All of us have our rots back in the Mainland, for that matter.

Due to historical reason, the unity of Taiwan and Mainland is still incomplete. This, however, does not mean that we cut the historical/cultural ties.

What is separate is politics as there is a self-claimed government in Taiwan. But people have never cut the ties.

For us, for example, Fujian or Fuzhou feels like just the next city you could go at will. It is quite different from between two sovereign nation.
