Makes a lot of sense for the US and the EU to force it’s own pharmaceutical companies (probably 90% of the industry) to diversify and avoid reliance on any one country. The same should be done for all critical supplies. China can make non essentials with no redundancy in the supply chain.

Not possible. US and EU worker paid are too high and ill efficient. Even there is a supply, chain it will be a government highly subsidized small one which is not competitive against China.

The world is bigger than EU, US and China. I keep repeating diversifying supply chain does not imply local manufacturing in the EU or US. This is not about jobs but mitigation of risks - having everything made in China is too risky as proved by the latest outbreak.

A close friend is an industrial automation expert of global renown, he is confident that fully automated factories is possible today it is a question of investment not tech. I think that investment will be spurred by recent events and manufacturing in EU or the US for domestic markets may not be that far fetched.

The US is entirely (entirely!) dependent on a trashy country like India for basic development of software, for network infrastructure and worse yet, for all critical database and security skills, which weren't supposed to be farmed out by the greedy corporates in the first place.

This is why America’s hyper capitalist economy and political system is a failure. China’s system combines market economy with socialism which is the correct way to go. America’s version of capitalism is extreme as it doesn’t bring benefits to its people. When everything revolves around profit, everything and everybody is up for sale.

Taking into account how drugs manufacturer price gauge the American public i cant even image how those companies are going to price gouge the consumer once they have to pay more for the precursors that they consume to manufacture their products.
On the good side, prices of medical drugs in developing countries will likely fall if some rich nations reshore their drug manufacturing, the Chinese and the Indians will have to sell it at a cheaper price in poorer countries.

Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Cisco, Netflix employ tens of thousands of software engineers in USA. Majority of their workforce is in USA. Cisco is the only one with a large presence in India. All the database companies - Oracle, Microsoft are located in USA. The open source options MySQL and MariaDB are driven from American soil.
