Hong Kong was not British colony as China did not recognise unequal treaties ceding city to Britain, new textbooks reveal

If he actually thought 99 was as good as forever he simply would have put “forever” in the document instead of 99 and saved any future questioning about his intentions.

I’m not sure the waiting game was a great example of determination.

Look at “forever” lease Guantanamo. Now at year 119. I’m sure once the Castro cronies are gone it will be returned…and that isn’t due to some great display of determination.
If hong kong is ceded to UK forever. PLA would have liberate HK right after the The Korea war.

The UK actually scared of PLA right after Korea war in 1953, they know they have no way to stop PLA from recaptured it. But Mao want HK to be the window for China to trade and communicate with West. He assured UK that PRC will wait for 1997.

It was a mistake by Mao.

Read the treaty, Hong Kong Island was ceded to the UK forever (So technically UK own it) after Chuenpi Convention and Nanking Protocol (Or treaty of Nanking), The cession was expanded by Convention of Peking in 1860 and finally the 99 years lease of Hong Kong North of Boundary Street (In Sham Shui Po, Kowloon) was signed in Second Treaty of Peking.

If everything was on 99 years lease, then Hong Kong Island should have been returned in 1942 and Kowloon in 1959 and New Territories in 1997.

If Hong Kong people don't want to be Chinese, they can immigrate back to their motherland, the United Kingdom. China doesn't owe them anything.
