Bangalore, Sep 1 (bdnews24.com/Reuters) - Honda Motor Co plans to form a joint venture in Bangladesh as early as this year to produce motorcycles, the Nikkei reported.

Honda used to sell motorcycles in Bangladesh through Indian motorcycle maker Hero MotoCorp Ltd. The Japanese company canceled its tie-up with Hero in 2011, the daily reported.

The venture, with a local business, will set up a low-cost assembly facility with an annual sales target of 10,000 to 20,000 units, the business daily said.

The motorcycles will be built for the local market from components shipped from India and Pakistan, the Nikkei reported.

Annual motorcycle sales in Bangladesh are about 100,000 units, the daily said.

Atlas used to assemble Honda before Honda went with JV with Hero. Hero cunningly made Honda to abandon its venture in Bangaldesh so that they could grab the market. But with initial success, it failed miserably and lost total Honda's market in Bangladesh. Honda is coming back which is good news and other companies will be careful if they think BD is just an extension of Indian market. Coca Cola also lost market in Bangladesh tying up with Indian. They realized it and now coming back to setup their own factory in Bangladesh.

Assembling task of motor vehicles in BD is nothing new. It would be pleasant to see at least the engine is manufactured in BD starting from the casting of metal.

I read few weeks earlier than Muhith would impose new taxes on motorcycle in order to promote the local brand, Walton. This may not go well with Honda's plans. But again, given the traffic situation at current state, any major producer of motorbike should get a decent market.

Honda coming to Bangladesh

Plans to assemble bikes, then manufacture those in 4 years time

The Japanese Honda Motor Co plans to form a joint venture company in Bangladesh to assemble motorcycles, as production cost had increased in other countries, said a senior official of the industries ministry yesterday.

Within five years of operation here, the company would go for full-scale motorbike manufacturing, said ABM Khorshed Alam, an additional secretary of the industries ministry.

Honda would form the JV plant with the state-owned Bangladesh Steel and Engineering Corporation (BSEC) soon, he said.

"On Wednesday, after vetting from the law ministry, I sent the summary of the deal for forming the joint venture company to the Prime Minister's Office for approval," said Alam.

After the go-ahead from Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the initial Tk 70-crore joint venture company will soon start operation at a rented abandoned garment factory at Maona in Gazipur. The company will increase investment after two years of operation.

Alam said the chief of Honda Motor would visit Bangladesh within 15 days of the approval for finalising the JV plant.

"We are trying to purchase a suitable piece of land for setting up the permanent plant," he added.

Of the total investment, BSEC will own 30 percent stake, while Honda will own 70 percent in the project, he informed.

The Japanese company was looking for a local partner over the last few years, but they were not convinced with the private sector. In 2009, they had proposed to the government for setting up a JV, he said.

He said the company was coming to Bangladesh as the demand for motorcycles in the country was increasing.

Generally, Honda sets up a plant in a country where 50,000 motorcycles are sold annually. But, in Bangladesh the annual sale of motorcycle is more than two lakh, he added.

The local light engineering sector would be immensely benefited if the company is set up. Some other motorcycle companies were also contacting the industries ministry for setting up their plants, the official added.

"I know Honda is negotiating with a state-owned company for setting up a joint venture plant," said a senior official of the Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO) in Dhaka asking not to be named.

Rashed Ahmad Ali, president of Japan-Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry (JBCCI), said Honda was coming to Bangladesh for the government's "China + one policy" (a policy adopted by the Japanese government to reduce dependency on China).

"The cost of production in China has gone high. That is one of the major reasons for shifting the production base to other countries," he added.

"The motorcycles will be built for the local market and with the components shipped from India and Pakistan," reports Reuters news agency.

After selling 26 percent stake in the JV Hero-Honda Company at a cost of $2 billion, Honda set up two manufacturing plants in India and the company is currently operating two other manufacturing plants in Pakistan as well, said media reports.

The parts will be imported from Pakistan and India (I have no problem with Pakistani parts though, as we can also help our Pak brothers economically) i.e this will be just an assembly plant. But still a good start and policies should be there to improve the local parts manufacturers and parts manufacturing industry. Also local brands like Walton should be protected.

বিএসইসি‘র পক্ষে সংস্থার চেয়ারম্যান মোঃ আতাউর রহমান এবং হোন্ডা মোটরস কোম্পানির মোটর সাইকেল বিক্রয় বিভাগের মহাব্যবস্থাপক তসিয়োকা ইনোমা চুক্তিতে স্বাক্ষর করেন। শিল্প মন্ত্রণালয়ের সম্মেলন কক্ষে অনুষ্ঠিত চুক্তি স্বাক্ষর অনুষ্ঠানে শিল্পমন্ত্রী দিলীপ বড়ুয়া প্রধান অতিথি হিসেবে উপস্থিত ছিলেন।

অনুষ্ঠানে শিল্পসচিব মোহাম্মদ মঈনউদ্দীন আবদুল্লাহ্, হোন্ডা মোটরস কোম্পানির মোটর সাইকেল বিক্রয় বিভাগের মহাব্যবস্থাপক তসিয়োকা ইনোমা, বিএসইসি‘র চেয়ারম্যান মোঃ আতাউর রহমান বক্তব্য রাখেন। এ সময় শিল্প মন্ত্রণালয়ের অতিরিক্ত সচিব এ বি এম খোরশেদ আলমসহ শিল্প মন্ত্রণালয়, বিএসইসি এবং জাপানের হোন্ডা মোটরস কোম্পানির ঊর্ধ্বতন কর্মকর্তারা উপস্থিত ছিলেন।

চুক্তি অনুযায়ী যৌথ বিনিয়োগে স্থাপিত এ কোম্পানির নাম হবে বাংলাদেশ হোন্ডা প্রাইভেট লিমিটেড। প্রাথমিকভাবে ৬১ কোটি টাকা মূলধন নিয়ে এ কোম্পানি যাত্রা শুরু করবে। পর্যায়ক্রমে এর মূলধন বৃদ্ধি করা হবে। এ কোম্পানির শতকরা ৭০ ভাগ মালিকানা হোন্ডা মোটরস কোম্পানি এবং ৩০ ভাগ মালিকানা বিএসইসি‘র থাকবে।

৫ সদস্যের একটি পরিচালনা পর্ষদ এ কোম্পানি পরিচালনা করবে। এর মধ্যে ৩ জন পরিচালক জাপানি হোন্ডা কোম্পানি এবং ২ জন বিএসইসি থেকে মনোনীত হবেন। বিএসইসি‘র পরিচালকদের থেকে একজন কোম্পানির চেয়ারম্যান এবং হোন্ডা কোম্পানির পরিচালকদের মধ্য থেকে একজন ব্যবস্থাপনা পরিচালক মনোনীত হবেন।

গাজীপুরের শ্রীপুর উপজেলায় প্রথমে কারখানাটি গড়ে তোলা হবে। পরবর্তীতে বিএসইসি‘র নিজস্ব জমিতে এ কারখানা স্থানান্তর করা হবে। প্রথম বছর কারখানায় ১০ হাজার পিস্ মোটর সাইকেল সংযোজনের লক্ষ্যমাত্রা রয়েছে। দ্বিতীয় বছর তা বাড়িয়ে ৩৫ হাজার এবং তৃতীয় বছর তা ৭০ হাজার পিসে্ উন্নীত করা হবে। চতুর্থ বছরে নিজস্ব জায়গায় স্থাপিত কারখানায় ১ লাখ পিস্ উত্পাদনের লক্ষ্যমাত্রা রয়েছে।

নতুন এ কারখানায় প্রাথমিকভাবে ১শ‘ লোকের কর্মসংস্থান হবে। কারখানার সংযোজন ও উত্পাদন ক্ষমতা বৃদ্ধির সাথে সাথে নতুন জনবলের কর্মসংস্থান সৃষ্টি হবে।

Now its 100% BD made i guess.Recently they started to make their own engine but earlier they used to import engines from South Korea.
