Holland to ban burqa in public

lets not get side tracked by Iran/Saudi issues. I just mentioned them to point out that they are the exception not the norm as to what Muslim government do. In Pakistan a lot of women observe the CONDITION (lets get the terminology right) of Hijab, by EITHER (all are different things) the head scarf, Burkha, or a Burkha with a veil. Women wear the Burkha with their faces uncovered.

I went to college with a lot of hijabi girls. Some of my coolest friends were Hijabis and they were regular girls. They just didn't go around banging 10 guys but hung out with us like any other friends.

Let me try to put what Jana said in another way, how I think it might be for some of the women of today's times. I think each woman perceives nudity in a different way. The governments should have no say in that. I can give them the veil for security reasons only, but to ban the burkha is like saying we want you to wear clothes that show the curves and the shape of your body.

sexual harassment at the state level.

Dutch criticised for ‘not disguising prejudice against Muslims’

By Khalid Hasan

WASHINGTON: The Washington Post on Saturday criticised the Dutch government for no longer even bothering to “disguise its ugly prejudice” against Muslims.

The newspaper said in an editorial that Muslim communities were increasingly portrayed – especially by the European media – as havens for religious intolerance that flourished because of the overly tolerant policies of liberal governments.

While until relatively recently, some Western European governments shrank from confronting clerics or others who promoted extremist ideology or encouraged terrorism and some European artists and politicians have been threatened or even killed for mocking Islam, another important part of the dangerous increase in tensions between Europeans and Muslims is the blatant bigotry of many mainstream political leaders, journalists and other elites against Islam and its followers.

The editorial said that sometimes the bigots portrayed their crude attacks on Muslim beliefs and culture as a defence of freedom of speech. Sometimes they claim to be promoting better communication, as when British parliamentarian Jack Straw recently asked Muslim women to remove their veils when visiting his office. “Luckily for the enemies of cynicism and disingenuousness, there is also the Dutch government, which no longer bothers to disguise its ugly prejudice,” said the Post.

The newspaper pointed out that on November17, just five days before the general election in the Netherlands, the incumbent centre-right government promised that, if re-elected, it would introduce legislation to ban the wearing of burqas and other facial coverings in most public places, including courts, schools, trains and even streets.

While the ruling Christian Democratic Appeal party finished first in the voting, the makeup of the next government remains unclear. If enacted, the prohibition would affect no more than a few dozen of the country’s one million Muslims, who make up some six percent of the population. “The point, however, is symbolic: a country famous for tolerating prostitution, drug use, euthanasia and public nudity considers Muslim veiling beyond the pale,” said the editorial.

Rita Verdonk, the immigration minister who is rapidly becoming the “face of the new Dutch intolerance”, claimed that the measure was needed for “reasons of public order, security and protection of citizens”. The newspaper observed, “Nothing subtle in that connection: as far as Ms Verdonk is concerned, burqas and terrorism are synonymous.” Like other Europeans, the Dutch have reason to worry about terrorism, but attacking the Muslim culture, as opposed to those who practice or promote violent acts, is no way to diminish the threat. It would not be surprising if more Dutch Muslims responded to their government by putting on burqas, or by answering intolerance with intolerance, warned the Post.
