Hockey legend refuses heart transplant offer in Pakistan

World Cup-winning field hockey goalkeeper Mansoor Ahmed on Monday refused the offer of having his heart transplant conducted in Pakistan.

“Pakistan does not have enough facilities, I want the transplant to be conducted in India,” Ahmed said.

The ailing sports star reached out to India last week and asked for help in securing a heart transplant — despite years of breaking the eastern neighbours’ “hearts on the field”.

The 49-year-old has been suffering for weeks from complications stemming from a pacemaker and stents implanted in his heart.

Ahmed has been a sporting icon in Pakistan since helping the country win the 1994 World Cup in Sydney with his penalty stroke save against the Netherlands in the final.


“I may have broken a lot of Indian hearts on the field of play by beating India in the Indira Gandhi Cup [1989] and in other events but that was sport,” Ahmed had told AFP in a recent interview, adding, “Now I need a heart transplant in India and for that I need support from the Indian government.”

Ahmed — who played 338 international matches, participated in three Olympics and various other high-profile events in a career spanning from 1986 to 2000 — said the visa could be a lifesaver.

Whether it is life expectancy, mortality due to all causes, under-five mortality or mortality among men and women between 15 and 49 years, on most counts, India ranks way below China, Brazil and Sri Lanka, just below Bangladesh and Nepal and in some cases even Pakistan.

Healthcare shame: India ranked 154th out of 195 countries ranked by Lancet Medical Journal

India has failed to achieve in healthcare goals, badly lagging behind China, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in terms of accessibility and quality, as per the new Global Burden of Disease study published in the medical journal Lancet.

India was ranked 154th position in the ranking of healthcare quality amongst 195 countries, whereas some countries like South Korea, Peru and China have seen greatest improvements in healthcare access and quality since 1990.

China, with a score of 74 on the index, has been ranked at 82 - far ahead of India, and Sri Lanka has scored 73 on the index. Similarly, Brazil and Bangladesh have score 65 and 52 respectively.

Why 581 Million Indians Endure India’s Worst Healthcare

Nine of India’s poorest states–home to 581 million or 48% of India’s population–account for 70% of the country’s infant deaths, 75% of under-five deaths and 62% of maternal deaths, but do not spend even the money they have set aside for healthcare, according to an IndiaSpend analysis of 2017 Reserve Bank of India data on state budgets.

The data also reveal:

a. The maternal mortality ratio–deaths of mothers per 100,000 births–in these states is 32% higher (244) than the national average (167).

b. 38% and 40% children in these states are underweight (low weight-for-age) and stunted (low height-for-age), respectively, higher than the national average of 36% and 38%, respectively, according to 2015-16 national health data, the latest available.

On new health index, India ranks 143/188


The first global analysis that assesses countries on sustainable development goal (SDG) health performance was launched at a special event at the UN General Assembly Wednesday and published online in The Lancet.

The study by an international collaboration on the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) analysed each country’s progress towards achieving health-related SDG targets by creating an overall SDG Index score. Countries were then ranked by their scores to show which nations are closest to achieving the targets.

The Natixis Global Asset Management's fourth annual Global Retirement Index (GRI) released on Tuesday has ranked India last (43) out of 43 countries.

New Delhi: Even as the government is making all efforts to push growth and improve the living conditions of the people, a global survey has revealed that India is the worst place for retirement.

The Natixis Global Asset Management's fourth annual Global Retirement Index (GRI) released on Tuesday has ranked India last (43) out of 43 countries.

The survey also ranked India with the worst in healthcare system with Health index score of just 4 percent, the lowest score in any sub-index in this year’s GRI.

India has the lowest ranks for health expenditure per capita, non-insured health expenditure and life expectancy out of all countries measured in this year’s GRI, the survey pointed out.

“While people in urban areas have greater access to adequate healthcare services, India’s massive rural population is still denied basic healthcare,” the survey said.

In the health index, Luxemburg top the chart followed by Netherlands and Norway in the second and third place respectively.
