V K Singh praises Musharraf's 'courage'

NEW DELHI: Former Pakistan military ruler Gen Pervez Musharraf today received praise for coming deep into Indian territory in Kargil in 1999 from former Army Chief Gen V K Singh, who said it showed the "courage" of a military commander.

Singh, who headed the Indian Army from 2010 to 2012, said there were "mistakes" on the Indian side that allowed Pakistani troops to cross over into Indian territory and let Musharraf go back safely.

"As far as General Musharraf is concerned, I would like to put it in two ways. One, as a military commander, I would commend Gen Musharraf for coming 11 km (inside Indian territory) to stay with his troops for a night. It is the courage of a military commander that he came so far knowing that there was danger," Singh told reporters here.

"Second, what was happening on our side you all know and facts are before you. Why did we allow him to go? Why did we allow them to enter? I would only say that there were some mistakes, which need to be rectified," he said.

Singh was commenting on the revelation by a senior retired officer of Pakistan Army that Musharraf had stayed for a night inside Indian territory with his troops before the three-month conflict erupted in Kargil in 1999.

The former Army Chief said the revelation was just a confirmation that Pakistan had started the Kargil war.

"What happened in 1999, we including the Indian Army know that Pakistan Army had started the Kargil war. There is nothing new in it," Singh said.

He said Pakistan had been telling lies and "now only its officials are confirming our stand."

If he had not given NRO, he would have earned more reputation in eyes of Pakistani Youth.

He is controversial figure but even Indians call him "Mushy". He has THE GUTS, can take on an enemy in battlefield or on media.

Seriously, Musharraf crossed Indian border and Indians came to know about his presence way later ?

NRO ruined everything he achieved.

his other mistakes include
1) enlightened moderation( worst time to have something like that , food for the devil ttp)
2) giving media unchecked freedom
3) halting the NAB prosecution and giving up on it.

why couldn't Pakistan achieve her goals, even though we were in a better position then india?

A very valid question, we had militaty advantage but lost due to failed non military tactics. The initial claim of mujahideen should not have been made. It seemed we hurried on the plan, china was also not on board.
Pakistan should have made a better plan, mostly political one. An incident in siachen should have been made hot and few months later take kargil with excuse of safety in siachen. Pakistani claim on siachen is most solid among others. A good political and military front together was required for victory and its consolidation.
I still blame army as they should not have gone through with the operation without political plan and will. A kargil type operation would have made more sense these days.

Definitely --- but even before that, don't forget that he kept the ultra corrupt Q League in power in Punjab (multiple mega scams), the R&AW-backed terrorist force MQM, destroyed our major export industries because of Shaukat Aziz's bank-obsessed policies (the ex PM was "exported" just as quickly as he was imported.)
Perhaps most dangerously, he tied the hands of and greatly rolled back our capability to support genuine resistance movements externally (under US pressure.) He almost got killed for it too.

Nobody can doubt his guts though, and a SSG mentality officer (comfort with UW, etc.) at the top would really help the Army and the country at this point.

The only advantage Pak had was the element of surprise. It was also monumentally stupid since only months ago Vajpayee had undertaken the bus to Lahore and was committed to peace.

After that it was pretty much all downhill for Pakistan - militarily and politically.

He also wrote a book which maligned Pakistan more than the PM saying Pakistan created Al Qaeda, Whose stopping the citizens to leave, swine etc etc etc...

20 years and counting is his legacy written in blood.

Pirouz of Delhi !!

So, praising a stupidity by enemy becomes master stroke?
Stupidity can never turn into intelligence, no matter how many times you praise it.

Yup Stupidity is that to believe in propaganda. Find out who still hold most of the prominent peaks in Kargil.
You buy Indian propaganda line hook and sinker.

Musharaf was silly to have trusted them. You provide milk to the snakes in the hope of a cure!! Off course they are going to bite you back, that's their nature.

IK on the contrary know them well enough. He is treating them for what they are. That's why we hear their noises all the times.
They are not getting away with it, no wonder they are raising voices and trying to cut a niche for themselves and their family, like they did with Musharaf. Despite all their black mailing, IK has not budge yet.

I hope he doesn't. Choi brothers are chips of the old block. Their Modus Operandi is the same as Sharifs.
