To be honest, if you think about it, South Asia is the one of least secular places on the planet. Pakistan, we all know how its people/system are. India while secular in name, its public in recent years seem to begin to espouse forms of hatred for minority faiths, that is manifesting into a new kind of nationalism, and political parties. Basically, nowadays, only Hindus are considered patriots, Muslims definitely not, others are in the grey zone for these neo-nationalists. Although a significant amount of liberals espouse to the true values of secularism in India, especially in areas like South India/West Bengal, the much more vocal population of bigots seem to overshadow them by a mile. Bangladeshis too aren't really secular per se, as can be seen with Jamatis and all that, but the good thing about us that we respect other religious groups for the most part, and for us, being Bengali/Bangladeshi is more important than anything. Unlike those bigot Indians like Sakra, we don't view our religious minorities as a threat or whatever. In Bangladesh, parties like Jamaat would never dared be elected by the people, but in India there's a whole group of Hindu nationalists playing the big political field. Even if the Rohingyas were Hindu, there'd a large outcry still in Bangladesh from the general public to protect them, as they are related to us ethnically/culturally.
