What's new

Hindi and Urdu words learning thread.

Well yes, Urdu contains a fair amount of Sanskrit derived words and other Indic-origin words, naturally :D
We do use aab to mean water as well as Tacit Wave pointed out, although it might be of Persian origin and not Arabic.

I think Aab has its root in Sanskrit. Punj-aab is land of five rivers.

Edit: Sry missed earlier conversation on this.

afternoon is apraahn in sanskrit

kidnap is apharan

Sorry if I sound like an a-hole :) but most Sanskrit words should end with a vowel. Apaharanam becomes kidnap. I haven't heard apraahn though.

.
Sanskrit/Hindi:- Trasadi

English:-Tragedy

Sanskrit:- Hora

English:-Hour

Sanskrit:-Gyamiti

English:-Geometry

Sanskrit:-Trikonamiti

English:-Trigonometry

These words are almost identical.It really amazes me sometimes.

More words,

Sanskrit:p:ath

English:p:ath

Sanskrit:-Klesh

English:-Clash

Sanskrit:-Sant

English:-Saint

Heyyy,I think maqaam is not the right word for location.What I have learnt from the bollywood movies,maqaam means an objective/goal.

Maybe JAGAH is a more apt word.

Bollywood :lol: They do twist the meanings of some words at times, just so you know.

However, they are right this time. Maqam is actually better translated as destination, but can be used to mean place as well :)

The most commonly word used for destination however is manzil.

Sanskrit and Latin share similarities. For example, hour is hora in latin, as well as sanskrit. that is why we call it a horoscope.

Klesh and clash are not even semantically similar. they mean different things. neither are the related.

Sant and Saint is also not related. Saint originates from latin "Sanctus" which means "sanctioned"
This refers to the papal sanction required to be recognized as a saint in Christianity.

Vishwnath anand (World chess champ)

Vishw == world
nath == owner
