Laos is to have its first high-speed rail link after a contract was signed yesterday to lay tracks between Savannakhet province and the Vietnam border.

It is estimated that the US$5 billion project, to be financed by a Malaysian company, will be completed in five years, at which point Savannakhet will have a direct rail link to Lao Bao on the Laos-Vietnam border. The project will form part of a planned railway that will eventually link most of Southeast Asia.

A signing ceremony for the construction and development of the railway project took place at the National Convention Centre in Vientiane, before the start of the 9th Asia-Europe Meeting Summit.

Lao Prime Minister Thongsing Thammavong and Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak were there to witness the signing. Also attending the signing ceremony was Minister of Planning and Investment Mr Somdy Douangdy, Governor of Savannakhet province Mr Souphanh Keomixay, and Deputy Minister of Public Works and Transport Mr Lattanamany Khounnivong.

The construction of the 220km track is being undertaken by Malaysian company Giant Consolidated Limited, so President of the group Mr Mohammad Fadzwi Bin Hamidun, committee member Dr Tock Min Kin and a representative from the concession company Dr Yuhao Aixinjueluo were also present. “We expect that the project will begin soon,” said Deputy Director General of the Lao Railway Authority of the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, Mr Sonesack N. Nhansana.

Savannakhet province is located on the East-West Corridor linking Thailand, Laos and Vietnam via the Lao-Thai Friendship Bridge across the Mekong, and Road No. 9. It is also located on the north-south arterial route Road No. 13, which runs through Laos, from China to Cambodia.

When the entire planned rail link is completed, it will provide a non-stop connection to Singapore, through Thailand and Malaysia, into Kunming province, China, and through Vietnam. At the moment, public transport on this route is confined to the 15 bus stations situated between Savannakhet province and the Laos-Vietnam border, which run through Phin, Xepon and Nong districts and the Savan-Seno Economic Special Zone.

Thailand is expected to be next to get on board with a similar project in the near future.

Interesting, that Malaysia provides money and builds the highspeed trains instead of China or Japan.

Looks like this one is the horizontal (black) across Laos. On another thread China is building a railroad from Kunming to Vientiane (blue) and eventually will extended to this line.

However I think HSR is an extravagance for well to do people and eventually they'll get tired and take the planes instead. A regular railroad that eventually connect the whole SE Asian for regular traveling and movement of goods is the best way forward. No need to be fancy at this stage of development.

I disagree. I am indeed very excited to see the rapid economic development from Laos and Cambodia, whereas I think our economy can very much profit from that, especially from the incoming highspeed rails.

I like to see both Laos and Cambodia catchup with the boys economically in this area too, however, a HSR is not a prerequisite for that development than regular rail is. HSP benefits smaller group of people in a land where most people are poor and is not practical for movement of goods. I'll surprise if they'll be half full most of the time. Just some fancy project for some accomplishment seeking politicians and the future revenues, I bet, couldn't even cover the operation cost. You know how much a $5 billion can do in a country like Laos?

Not smart businesspeople these Laotian leaders.

How about the Vietnam section of the rail from Lao Bao to Dongha, is it high speed?

LOL. The Joke of the Year, Malaysia will be responsible for a high speed rail from Laos to Vietnam. Lets reflect on the following:
-Malaysia has not even one high speed rail in service, not even from Kuala Lumpur.
-Malaysia rail system is completely outdated and limited, for having resided in Malaysia for 5 years I can confirm.
-In Kuala Lumpur and all major cities, people rely mainly on car, buses and monorail as the main transporting system.
-Malaysia is specialized in Monorail which is an outdated transportation system.
-Even with the monorail, the transport network in Malaysia is saturated with traffic conjestion everywhere particularly in Kuala Lumpur
-Bus is the main transportation links between Malaysian cities. Apart from air transportation, you can go from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore by bus only.
-Laos is poor country, its better for it to improve its basic transportation system like roads and traditional railways system instead of going for high speed rails. Who would use the high speed train? The Laostian and the Vietnamese with one dollar a day. Its like a kid who is going to participate in the 100 metres Olympic race while he has not even learnt how to walk.
