Al-Qaida, according to Panetta himself, is at its death bed. Talibans have no goals beyond ruling Afghanistan and/or driving away what they think are the invaders of their soil.
But if the real objectives are about containing China and/or access to the vast natural resources in and/or around Afghanistan then it requires a different paradigm to see the conflict.

I am not sure if I have hit the nail anywhere
Really, I am not sure. But one thing I am increasingly sure is that a pro-American and/or pro-Indian, 'stable' or not, govt. in Afghanistan is not going to make much of a difference as far as containing the terrorists. They can come from anywhere in the world. Indeed, by completing alienating Pakistan, I am afraid, it will lead to even more threats of terrorism because Pakistan is a larger country with a much larger ex-pat population roaming the world. All it needs is one screwed up fanatic like the Times Square Bomber.
So, no, I don't see 'terrorism' as the biggest factor anymore for American involvement. In 2001, yes. But not now. There are plenty of regions of the world where the terrorist probably do find 'safe havens'.
So is it really China and/or natural resources? If so, then is Pakistan being asked to dump China in favor of the India-America alliance? If China can't support Pakistan enough then may be Pakistan should join the India-America alliance and be at peace?
shelve the Kashmir issue?
Without fully understanding this we will be darting in the dark.

U.S. didn't spend a trillion dollars to defeat Al Qaeda (which itself was a CIA creation). U.S. government told their public that their objective in Afghanistan was to dismantle Al Qaeda, kill or capture Osama Bin Laden. Al Qaeda is dismantled, Osama Bin Laden was "buried in sea" so why they are still sticking around.

In fact Afghanistan is the perfect place to have a throne for U.S. You have Iran to the west (a threat to US and Israel), the only Islamic country with nuclear bomb to the south-east (a threat to US and Israel), emerging superpower non-democratic/non-capitalist China to the east (a threat to US), and all the valuable natural resources you can dream of in the north Central Asian Republics. Afghanistan itself has many untapped natural resources like in Pakistan's western provinces, but Afghanistan is not nearly as populated as Pakistan so superpowers think it will be easy to manage a smaller population.

Even if tomorrow Taliban lays down their arms, America wont leave. They will tell their naive Americans we won in Afghanistan. Mission Accomplish. Naive Americans will shout USA! USA! America will build its permanent base in Afghanistan, and install puppets like Karzai to show the world here we now have democracy in Afghanistan. America will dictate orders to the puppets in Afghanistan, puppets will do whatever their master tell them. America dont see India as a threat so India will try to have a big influence in Afghanistan and that will be bad for Pakistan.

Perfect answer, good job! However, we wouldn't like to see permanent bases in Afghanistan by US for long terms and we need these problems to go away soon. right? How long Pakistan have to do war-words with US?


On topic, this is same method threatening such like Davis case, OBL raid, Time Squares, Afghanistan, etc. Nothing is new, tension temperature will go down soon.

Pakistan! Please learn from Libya, no matter how many times the country has helped the United States, it will always fall victim to scapegoatism and treachery.

Pakistan is not a true ally, rather it's a country to be used and abused.

the reason US in still sticking in pak is that they cant go back without anything to show for it. they need to show their people that they have won, otherwise, it will put into question the outcome of billions of dollars lost and lives lost. so they need a stable afganistan, moreover a US friendly afganistan after they leave to protect their prestige. as for US building its base in afganistan, the idea seems far fetched. Everybody knows that any installation of such a large size will be an easy target for terrorists. hence US will think about establishing its base only after the threat of bombings has evaporated from afganistan.

Islamabad: US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton again pressed Pakistan on Friday to act against terrorist safe havens, pointing out that militant groups have for long operated with impunity in the country and should not be tolerated.

Addressing a joint press conference with Pakistan Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar, Clinton said while US was committed to the people of Pakistan and their future, it wanted its relationship with the country to "deliver results" for both sides.

"We should be able to agree that for too long extremists have been able to operate here in Pakistan and from Pakistani soil," said Clinton, a day after her meeting with Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani.

Pressing hard for action against militant groups perpetrating violence, including Taliban and the Haqqani network, she said: "No one who targets innocent civilians, whether they be Pakistanis, Afghans, Americans or anyone else should be tolerated or protected."

She also welcomed the efforts being made by India and Pakistan to normalise trade relations and said a thriving economy and a stable and prosperous Pakistan would serve the interests of the region.

She said the US and NATO coalition forces in Afghanistan were working hard to put pressure on the Taliban and "across the border we look to Pakistan to take strong steps to deny them safe havens.”

Reiterating Pakistan's commitment to fight the menace of 'terrorism, Khar said more than anything else her country's fight was driven by the interests of its own people. However, she also said that the government would abide by political consensus over the issue.

"... let me state clearly that in evolving any future strategy the government will be guided by principles of the resolution of the all parties conference which calls upon the government to give peace a chance".

The US has been pressing Pakistan to launch a military operation against the Haqqani network in North Waziristan but the Pakistani has resisted the pressure, saying its forces were stretched too thin by operations in other parts of the country.

Clinton issued a stern warning to Pakistan yesterday that the country will pay a "very big price" if it continued to allow its territories to be used as safe havens for terrorists who have crossed the border to attack Americans and Afghans.
