While Hezbollah continues to provoke, threaten, and attack Israel, many ordinary Lebanese say they have had enough of the terror group using the country's territory to attack Israel – because it is they, not Hezbollah, who sustain the damage of an Israeli response. While reports in the Lebanese media said that “gunshots of joy” were heard in Beirut and Tripoli, celebrating the Hezbollah attack on Har Dov in northern Israel, a flood of messages on social media presented a different message altogether.

No less a personage than Michel Suleiman, the former president of Lebanon, asked on his Facebook page “where is the interest of Lebanon if it gets sucked into a war with Israel, which is the one that wants war.” Hezbollah, he said, was serving the interests of Israel by prompting a response when it attacks the country. Ordinary Lebanese also took to social networks Twitter and Facebook, saying that if Hezbollah wanted to fight Israel, it should find another venue to launch attacks from, because Lebanese were tired of spending time, energy, and money rebuilding after Israeli responses to Hezbollah provocations.

Also speaking out against Hezbollah was Christian leader Samir Jaja, who said that Wednesday's incident “shows that Hezbollah is expanding its activities against Lebanon.”

Earlier Wednesday, the Lebanese terror group fired antitank missiles at two IDF vehicles in the Har Dov area (Shebaa Farms) in a Hezbollah ambush Wednesday morning. Six casualties in light to moderate condition have been taken to Ziv Hospital in Tzfat. Additional casualties were evacuated to Rambam Hospital, but so far, no information has been released about their condition. The IDF vigorously denied Hezbollah claims that an IDF soldier had been kidnapped, and a Lebanese report later confirmed that Hezbollah had failed to capture an Israeli soldier.

Over the past several years, many Lebanese have increasingly criticized Hezbollah for its attacks on Israel from south Lebanon, not only because it made the country a target of Israeli responses, but because it was also closely allied with Syrian forces under the command of Bashar al-Assad. As Hezbollah terrorists assist Assad's soldiers in fighting Lebanese rebels, the rebel groups respond by attacking targets in Lebanon. Dozens of Lebanese – soldiers and civilians – have been killed in these attacks, and many Lebanese blame Hezbollah for these deaths.

.
There is no point commenting on the morality of this incident. It clearly was a reaction to the Israeli airstrikes; meaning the onus of precipitating this new 'crisis' falls on Israel, regardless of whichever side is on the right side of truth & morality.

But that aside, the moment the airstrikes were cleared by the Political leadership, there must have been atleast an expectation of retaliation? Or were they convinced of the incapability of the Hezbollah/Iranians to respond in force? Either way, This will sting Israel.

IDF response to Hezbollah missile fire.

Hezbollah said that the Quneitra Martyr Brigade committed the attack in retribution for Israel's attack in Syria 10 days ago. A report in Turkey's Anatolia news agency said Hezbollah had evacuated its facilities overnight ahead of the border attack. Hamas and the Islamic Jihad praised the attack.

In a statement, Hezbollah said its fighters destroyed a number of Israeli vehicles that were carrying Israeli officers and soldiers and caused casualties among "enemy ranks."

It said the attack was carried out by a group calling itself the "heroic martyrs of Quneitra," - suggesting it was retaliation for an Israeli airstrike on the Golan Heights on Jan. 18 that killed six-Hezbollah fighters and an Iranian general.

Lebanese security officials said Israel later fired 25 artillery shells into Lebanon. Wednesday's attack took place near Mount Dov and Shebaa Farms, a disputed tract of land where the borders of Israel, Lebanon and Syria meet.

The residents of two border adjacent kibbutzim, Kibbutz Dafna and Kibbiutz Kfar Giladi, were instructed to remain at home.

Two Lebanese officials said the Israeli shelling targeted the border villages of Majidiyeh, Abbasiyeh and Kfar Chouba near the Shebaa Farms area. They spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations.

On the Lebanese side, there were also no immediate reports of casualties. Families living on the border of the villages fled further within, fearing they would be hit, said the officials, who are based in south Lebanon.

One of the Lebanese officials said the incident is believed to be a "sophisticated Hezbollah operation" targeting Israeli vehicles along the border.

The attack came shortly after Israel launched airstrikes targeting Syrian army artillery posts over night in response to rockets fired Tuesday into the Israeli-held Golan Heights.

Israel has declined to comment on any connection to the Jan. 18 airstrike, but has braced for a response to the strike, beefing up its air defenses and increasing surveillance along its northern frontier.
