To be fair, the average American is in no way obligated to educate himself/herself about India or Indians. It isn't them who are migrating here in record numbers for education and employment. Ergo, it falls upon the Indian American community to reach out and be counted as an independent and vibrant part of the American fabric.

The African-American community have their Black History Month and Kwanzaa, Jewish Americans also have a month dedicated in their honor while Mexican Americans and members from the American gay community are lobbying hard to have their contributions taught under American contemporary history. What's stopping Indian Americans from thinking along the same lines? This is crucial as being mistaken for Arabs is quite literally costing Indian-origin Sikhs their lives.

Amazing me is that there are many numbers of dark-skinned Indian actors in every US TV programs, you see Dr. Sanjay Gupta, Fareed Zakaria, Raj Big Bang Theory, Apu The Simpsons, Kelly Kapoor Mindi Kaling, and other characters in comedy, drama, movies, and news. You will find Indian characters there, still audiences haven't learned about India as they think arelike black people.
