AWS is good if you want to open a website for commerce. It is not good if you want to run highly vectorized code. A modern weather forecasting system likely uses Computational Fluid Dynamics models to predict weather patterns. This involves solving large number of equations. Typically, they will run the same algorithm over a grid thousands of data points. Ideally, best done with GPU like architecture with 128, 256 or even 1024-way parallelism. The code is typically in Vector Fortran.
AWS and google, Microsoft have GPU as well. But not as good as dedicated supercomputer (me haven take a look in detail though).
On a side note, I am always piss with GoS foreigners policies. I was a cloud engineer serving under totally ignorant people managers (almost all Singapore managers are this kind and good engineers cannot be promoted). These stupid managers do not understand subject matters that they have a desperate need for someone with relevant experience -- despite the job is ridiculously easy.
They will not take young graduate because they cannot train engineers. They hire entire Indian village.
This is the treacherous Singapore elites and their managers.
