Have you ever wondered which country in the world speaks the best English? A new report released by private education company, Education First (EF) has ranked 72 countries according to their English proficiency based on an online test.

Pakistan among 10 worst countries for internet freedom

With a very high proficiency rating Netherland tops the list, just ahead of Denmark and Sweden, who rank in second and third place respectively. Iraq ranks last on the list with a very low English proficiency level.

With a low overall proficiency level, Pakistan ranks 48 on the list. Among reasons cited are the low percentage of people with access to the Internet and the level of spending on education.

The world’s most dangerous destinations

The results do not reflect the English proficiency of a country’s entire population. They are based on people who took the EF Standard English Test (EFSET), during 2015. The English Proficiency Index is based on the test scores of 950,000 adults from 72 countries.

Well, this report might have been irrelevant if our education system would have been in urdu and if our official language would have been urdu. It is kind of unfortunate that we have made English compulsory for anyone who wants to land a well paying job in Pakistan. So it is quite relevant in this respect. And it also shows the overall situation of literacy in Pakistan

.
One should remember that English was introduced in sub continent by invading forces who ruled for almost a century. One should be able to speak multiple language but it shouldn't be consider that speaking English is compulsory in every part of world.

At a personal level and having interacted with overseas Pakistanis it depends on where they have come from, meaning rural or urban. Pakistanis from cities such as Karachi Lahore Islamabad and Peshawar do have good English levels in reading writing and speaking. The vast majority of Pakistanis from rural parts struggle to understand or even communicate in English.

You do know that every language got spread by some "Invading Force",right??Be it English or Urdu and Farsi.Hate it or not,you can't live without English today.Yes,in countries like India, learning 10 regional languages may fell short, but learning English can sail you through almost anywhere, even in India.

.
Now let's discuss the real behind such useless report. For Pakistani's speaking English is a "status symbol" Yes i know it's true for Indians as well but let's stick to Pakistan. If you speak English you are considered modern lol and if you have a foreign accent then man o man you are gonna get tons of praises.........This explains the existence of desi's with foreign accents.

Nah re, not true for India anymore. To be able to speak in english doesn't impress anyone, except, perhaps in north India.
Foreign accent is almost unheard of, in my part of India, infact it will attract ridicule from peers if anyone tries.
Young folks who are still in school and colleges are comfortable with local accents. Young musicians now a days sing in english in local accent and it is appreciated and well accepted by everyone.
