TWO Bollywood actresses who co-own IPL teams have claimed they were threatened into snubbing Pakistani cricketers in the IPL auction, while an explosive report has blamed the threats as coming from Indian political group Shiv Sena, which recently issued warnings against Australian players.

Film stars Shilpa Shetty and Preity Zinta have said that threats were made against them and any Pakistan player who participated in this season's IPL. Subsequently, no Pakistan cricketer was chosen for the tournament despite the nation's status as world Twenty20 champion and its players among the best in the world in the shortest format.

''You must look at it pragmatically and see that we have had these people who are constantly threatening,'' Rajasthan co-owner Shetty told Indian publication Mid-Day. ''It's not something we hold against the Pakistani players.

''We completely understand the situation but as franchise owners are we willing to take that risk? If something happens to the Pakistani players, the onus lies on us and who is going to take responsibility for a situation like that?

''When we said 'availability', we wanted complete assurance that those players would be available in the country and that we were going to be able to provide security for them.''

Zinta, co-owner of Kings XI Punjab, reportedly told an Indian-language television station: ''We would have loved to have the T20 world champions in our teams to bring real joy to the extravaganza but what can we do if we have certain threats about not [only] our own safety but the safety of the Pakistani players too, with no official quarter assuring us of foolproof security of players during the tournament?''

Pakistan's Daily Mail reported the threats were made by Shiv Sena and Indian intelligence agency Research and Analysis Wing (RAW). It also claimed IPL commissioner Lalit Modi was threatened by Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray to ensure Pakistan players were not selected, without quoting either man or their spokespeople.

Modi said security measures will be put in place to protect Australian IPL players who have been threatened by Shiv Sena.

Pakistan's Twenty20 captain Shahid Afridi also believes there was political influence applied to IPL owners to boycott his countrymen in the auction.

''The way I see it, the IPL and India have made fun of us and our country by treating us this way,'' Afridi said.

''We are the Twenty20 world champions and for me the attitude of the franchises was disappointing. The Indian government may have put pressure on IPL franchises and prevented them from picking up Pakistan players as most of the franchises wanted to take us.''

You know what they say, small things amuse little minds.!
They shiver at the border but manage to shout at the boundary .......
and still lose. :yahoo:

.
agreed but their attitude was aggressive and not good to us it shows how much they hate us

.
Threats to the Australians, threats to the Pakistanis, just call the whole thing off after all its hardly international cricket without the best players.

.
India should choose another Venue (country) for IPL like last year....... this year its not safe there in India..... so many threats for Pakistan and Australia..... and even one attack on one player even Indian security forces successfully defend it..... still India will be staking its futures series (i.e. World Cup) scheduled to be held in India

If the threats were not openly given that would have been a different scenario..... its going be very risky there in India this time

What counts is getting the job done, mere posturing is for self consumption. In any case we don't love them either besides, who had the last laugh.:pakistan:

Every key security measures have been undertaken and at the same time Indian security establishment has responded to any alert state quite outstandingly, at the same time, Players are taken in confidence and given sufficient demo's about security measures taken around playing venues.

if that was the case then why making excuses and saying security threats for Pakistan and Australia?

WJ : Shiver at the border? ..... In a sentence you sum up those dead in wars? Anyways ......does not take away anything from those brave boys who watch our respective borders.

Its a sports for gods sake. GoI has officially announced it had nothing to do with the whole of IPL. Mr.Tharoor has actually clarified that he had cleared the files of the players fast considering the deadline.

Like last year, this year too the GoI has clarified that it will not be able to provide out of the way security to IPL event. This is the same stand GoI has taken for last two years. Now add up the threat by the racist party like shiv-sena.

Many of the owners are quite out spoken.. had there been any influence from the GoI, someone would have disclosed the same.

So, in absence of any direct or indirect proof against GoI, it stands that they are innocent.

There might be some influence from third party like Mr.Modi , SS, etc which we are not aware of as of now .... but GoI has made it clear it had not influence this decisions in any way... and we believe our government.

I must agree with you to a large extent. If the IPL organisors could not guarantee the safety of the Pakistani players then why wasn't the event moved to a neutral location to ensure that the safety requirements are met. I attended the event in South Africa last year and the mood was great. There was adequate security. Plenty of Indians, Pakistanis and Bangladeshis attended the event apart from people supporting their heroes from participating nations. The stands were full and the team camaradie was great. IPL organisors should consider moving this event out of India if stupid Indians like Thakeray etc make threats against any of the participating players. Let Thakeray explain to India why they are losing out on hosting one of the most popular events in cricket which has mostly Indian sponsorship

.
Pakistani Players need to participate in the IPL.

Same as President Zardari who has demanded US$ 100 Billion from USA as Marshall Plan.

Pakistan also wants US$ 70 Billion from Friends of Pakistan, US$ 40 Billion from Friends of Democratic Pakistan in addition to Billions of US$ from China, Saudi Arabia as well as other “Friendly” Countries.

As India is a “Poor” Country in comparison with Pakistan so IPL should at least let the Pakistani Cricketers play in their League and if the Franchisees do not agree then IPL should pay the Pakistani Cricketers anyway.
