Two Pakistani troops injured, one Afghan killed in border clash

KABUL: An Afghan police guard was killed and two Pakistani trops were injured in cross-border shelling overnight, sources said Thursday, in the latest clash to underline strained ties between the fractious neighbours.

Pakistan and Afghanistan blamed each other for starting the firing on the porous border, which is a crucial battleground in the fight against Taliban militants.

An Afghan official who declined to be named said that one Afghan was killed in several hours of artillery exchanges, while Pakistani authorities said that two of its security personnel had been wounded.

"Afghan border police posts came under fire at around 9:00 pm (1630 GMT) last night. Our border police returned fire," Afghan interior ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqqi told.

"The exchange lasted until 2:00 am," he said, adding no further details were available as the incident was being investigated.

"It was continuous fire on one of our checkposts that forced our troops to retaliate," a senior Pakistan security official told.

"The ANA (Afghan National Army) was firing with small and heavy weapons. At least two of our security personnel were injured. We will raise this issue on the proper forum," the official said.

Good job by ANA to remove illegal border posts. If this is true, then Pakistan has suffered a humiliating defeat. They could not even beat "rag tag", "heroin addicts" armed with only small arms.
