I always cringe when people take the name of Caesar with the greatest military commanders of human history like Alexander, Hannibal, Khalid, Changez Khan, Subutei etc...
Caesar wasn't a brilliant commander...definitely not in the league of above mentioned men...
PS...the reason Khalid isn't known much (which isn't quite true btw, he is a global figure..25% to 30% humanity knows him b/c he was a significant Islamic figure) is the fact that he was just a general, not the 'ruler' of his empire. Another example would be Subutei..I bet most people even in this forum don't know him...even though he is the general who conquered most land in history...Also, over-praise can be a factor too. Since Khalid was a disciple of Prophet Muhammad (SAW)..Muslims always write him as "hazrat khalid bin waleed" and give him a status of someone 'holier than normal'..this also turns non-Muslims off vis-a-vis Khalid.
Same is the case with many Sikh generals, who aren't taken seriously because of the over-praising of those generals..almost making them into some 'holier' figure...
Alexander the Great, Khalid Ibn Waleed, Hannibal, Gengis Khan, Subutei/Napolean (tie) are top five greatest generals of history...rank them in any order...one's personal choice...
You know u underestimate old gaius,
he did what hannibal couldn't do at zama.Win despite massive cavalry disadvantage. He adapted brilliantly at pharsalus.
Take the battle of thapsus, his ingenous marching formation completely fooled labienus.
Take alesia, that circumvillation is unique among all battles in history.
I like to think of caesar as the great improviser, plus u got to admit he faced far more diversified and superior opposition than say alexander.
He fought the lusitanian[portugese],helvetti[swiss],suebi[germans],gauls[french],belgae[celts/belgian],romans,egyptians and pontus[asia minor].Thats a wide range of geographical enemies.
His opposing commanders were also far tougher than darius.
Ariovistus, the german.Vercingetorix the charismatic gallic hero.
Labienus, his own former 2nd in command and grizzled war veteran.
And pompey the great.Plus others.
He along with napoleon also remains the only commanders to capture a whole enmy army almost intact just by manuevering...napoleon[ulm]caesar[illerda against afrianus, petrius pompey's spanish legions]
Czar,kaiser..caesar..he certainly got his PR right too.But He's certainly not as blank as u portray him to be.
