Hazara community finds safe haven in Peshawar - Asia - Al Jazeera English *

The ethnic group Hazara make up about 18 per cent of Afghanistan's population, but many have been forced to flee persecution and war in their country.

More than half a million Hazaras now live in Pakistan, but there too they have been targeted by religious extremists for their Shia Muslim beliefs.

In Balochistan, where most of Hazaras reside, the group Lashkar-e-Jangvi has declared an open war against them. At least 90 Hazaras have been killed since July 30.

But the historic city of Peshawar in the northwest has welcomed them with open arms, and trade seems to be thriving for many members of the small community.

Al Jazeera's Kamal Hyder reports.

____________

Nice to hear the Peshawaris have welcomed them. Recently Al Jazeera also reported Sikhs living peacefully amongst Muslims in Peshawar.

Peshawar is often seen as an extremist city but the reality is Peshawar is very high on religious freedom. Muslims, Sikhs,Hindus and Christians get a long really well and live in peace.
The only extremists in Peshawar are the Afghan refugees, the locals are great welcoming people.

the only time we ever saw burqas in Peshawar was when the Afghan refugees started flooding in...there were changes (some bad ones) during the fallout after the soviet invasion of Afghanistan next door

as is the case even in cities like Karachi --we saw increase in street crime and increase in drugs/weapons trade.

it is still a very important city especially from historical perspective --as it leads to the gateway of Khyber Pass. The city is where many different cultures and heritage met
