Besides, 11 persons were awarded different terms of jail in the sensational cases, said Public Prosecutor Mosharraf Hossain Kajal. Judge Shahed Nuruddin of the Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 at Old Dhaka's Nazimuddin Road pronounced the verdict around 12:13 pm after a long wait for over 14 years.

AL not fully satisfied over 21 Aug attack verdict: Quader

Meanwhile, Awami League (AL) General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said his party is not fully satisfied over the verdict as the mastermind of the attack BNP's acting vice-chairman Tarique Rahman was not awarded death penalty.

"We are not fully unhappy and also not fully satisfied over the verdict as the mastermind of the gruesome attack Tarique Rahman was not awarded capital punishment," he told journalist in his first reaction over the verdict.

The prime target of the horrible attack was the then opposition leader and incumbent Prime Minister Bangabandhu's daughter Sheikh Hasina, Quader said, adding that the plan of the attack was mapped out from the Hawa Bhaban.

One of the important accused for the attack Mufti Hannan acknowledged in his confessional statement before the court that permission for carrying out the attack was taken from Tarique Rahman.

The verdict, however, over the grenade attack has come after 14 years while it emerged as a topic of public discussion and criticism over the whole time, he said.

Meanwhile, BNP turned down on Wednesday the verdict in the August 21 grenade attack cases, saying it has been given at the 'behest of the government' with a political motive.

"BNP thinks that the verdict is a politically motivated one. It's a naked manifestation of satisfying the government's political vengeance," said BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.

Speaking at a press conference at the BNP's Nayapaltan central office, he further said, "We reject the dictated verdict."

Fakhrul also said the government has set another bad example of taking political revenge using the court as they did it by convicting BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia in a 'false' case in the past.

He alleged that though their party Senior Vice-chairman Tarique Rahman had no involvement in the grenade attack incident, he was given life imprisonment in the cases. "It has proved that no citizen of the country has now the scope of getting justice."

Under the circumstances, Fakhrul called on the people to become alert about the government's 'vindictive attitude and its foul strategy of using court'. "We also urge people to get united to wage a movement to establish a pro-people government by ousting the current unelected one."

He said they will carry out different political programmes against the verdict alongside taking legal measures.

BNP standing committee member Moudud Ahmed said the prosecution could not present any straightforward document and witness before the court to prove Tarique Rahman's involvement in the incident. "Despite this, he was sentenced to life imprisonment for making political gains."

AL wants Khaleda Zia’s trial, death penalty to Tarique: Quader

DHAKA, Oct 10, 2018 (BSS) – Awami League today demanded trial of BNP chief Begum Khaleda Zia and awarding death penalty to her son and BNP’s current acting chairman Tarique Rahman over the August 21 barbaric grenade attack cases.

“Begum Zia’s son Tarique Rahman was the mastermind of the heinous August 21 grenade attack on the then opposition leader and incumbent Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Therefore we demanded capital punishment to Tarique in the case,” Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader said in a reaction to the verdict at AL president’s political office in city’s Dhanmondi.

He said Luthfuzzaman Babar was the state minister for home affairs at that time and then Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia could not avoid the responsibility for the August 21, 2004 grenade attack as she was holding charge of the home ministry as per the parliamentary norms.

He said, “We have got justice over the heinous attack despite a relapse of a long period as the then BNP-Jamaat government wanted to divert the incident in a different direction to protect the main culprits of the attack…We’ve come out of the culture of a travesty of justice.”

“We have accepted the verdict positively because the court gave the judgment considering all evidences related to the case. But we urge the government to appeal for capital punishment of the masterminds, including Tarique Rahman,” Quader added.

He said, “We wanted justice. But we did not interfere in the cases. The procedures of the trial were conducted independently.”

About a comment of BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Quader, also the road transport and bridges minister, said BNP is a barbaric political party. They (BNP) are absolutely lying over the barbaric grenade attack and their mischievousness over the incident is simply ludicrous, he added.

“If BNP is not guilty of the attack, why they destroyed the evidences?, why they helped the attackers to flee?, why did they create obstacles on the investigation of FBI and Scotland Yard into the cases? and why they staged ‘Jaj Miah drama’?,” he asked.

The ruling party general secretary said the two incidents-the August 15, 1975 gruesome killing and the August 21, 2004 grenade attack–were intertwined in the same string.

AL Joint General Secretaries Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif, Dr Dipu Moni and Jahangir Kabir Nanak, Organizing Secretaries Ahmed Hossain and AK Anamul Haque Shamim, Cultural Affairs Secretary Ashim Kumar Ukil, Office Secretary Dr Abdus Sobhan Golap, Publicity and Publication Secretary Dr Hasan Mahmud, Information and Research Secretary Afzal Hossain and Liberation War Affairs Secretary Mrinal Kanti Das, among others, were present.

A court here today sentenced to death to 19 people including former junior home minister Lutfuzzaman Babar and life imprisonment to another 19 including ex-premier Khaleda Zia’s fugitive son Tarique Rahman on the August 21, 2004 grenade attack charge.

Judge Shahed Nuruddin of Dhaka’s Speedy Trial Tribunal pronounced the judgment ordering Rahman to be exposed to prison term for life along with 18 others and sentenced 19 people including ex-junior minister Lutfuzzaman Babar and ex-deputy minister Abdus Salam Pintu and several former army intelligence officers to death penalty.

“They (who are sentenced to death) shall be hanged by neck until they are dead,” Nuruddin pronounced as 31 of 49 the accused were present on the dock while several others are on the run abroad to evade justice.

He found all the 49 guilty and sentenced to different jail terms to the rest 11 for the attack that killed 24 people and wounded some 500 others, crippling some of them for life.

Those f*ckers only care about Tarique Zia. How about then Home minister Babar, Harris and others?

Seems like the witch of the east is getting direct orders from Modi himself. Goal is to cause a permanent split within the Bangladeshi people so that they are always in a strife and divided to be easily conquered. India is a step closer to reintegrating Bangladesh into it's fold. Pakistan's turn will be next. I wonder who will be Sheik Hasina of Pakistan?

I am curious as I did not follow the case much whether Tarique Rahman was really mastermind of the case? If not him who did that?

Mufti Hannan gave testimony saying Tarique approved of this. I dontdthink that makes him the mastermind. The likes of Babar and others were surely part of it.

The witch is far smarter than your demigod Modi. She does not need order.. she dictates herself.

Can anyone list the 19 people sentenced to death and their titles?

Hasina won 2 elections even before Modi came to power. Being jingoistic will not change reality. Hasina is a dictator and she is out to have revenge on those who purged her family

The key point is that RAW are fully supporting Sheik Hasina and she is crazed with power.

Says in the report, "Harris Chowdhury were jailed for life and Lutfozzaman Babar and Abdus Salam Pintu sentenced to death in a verdict in the August 21 grenade attack case on Wednesday".

Tarique and Harris are absconding (Harris in the UK like Tarique?). They have Babar in custody though and will probably make a spectacle of hanging him. SMH. There was absolutely no need for this bloody affair other than for personal vendetta.

I don't know why this woman is shooting herself in the foot again.
