If we go by history , I would say on case to case basis ....
Religion in ancient times provided organization and discipline among the common man. If we look at it objectively codified law has almost been hand in hand with codified religion. Ancient Sumerians, Mesopotamians , Egyptians come to mind.
In medieval times religion has both united and fragmented depending on one's perspective - The crusades united the once dis apparate Christians( the franks of France , the germans and the English ) in Europe who were busy waging wars against each other and their feifdoms before Pope Urban made his impassioned speech and exhorted them to recover holy land . In response the Muslims - mainly the Seljik Turks organized and unified the entire Muslim world even Arabia .
In modern times in this age of enlightenment where people are moving more and more away from blind , religious fanaticism to rational thinking and the call of conscience , Religion hinders more than facilitates the finding of common ground among people with similar thoughts and perspectives .
In our current age religion no longer serves the purpose of "Uniting" people since diversity in all spheres , even religion is here to stay for the foreseeable future . Rather the purpose of religion should be to find inner peace , spiritual contentment and mental satisfaction. A path to the almighty or a path to evolve into better human beings spiritually and mentally.
