HAS RELIGION UNITED US OR BROKEN US?

I was totally taken aback when my teacher today told us to discuss this issue in a GD practice, my thoughts were like this I TOLD THE GUYS THERE THAT I DON'T BELIEVE IN GOD, THERE ARE NO SCIENTIFIC REASONS FOR THAT, I JUST DON'T BELIEVE IN GOD. I TOLD THEM THAT RELIGIONS NEVER PROPAGATE HATRED ITS US WHO INTERPRET OUR RELIGIONS IN A DIFFERENT WAY.as i was saying this one of my friends interrupted me by saying THAT THE WHOLE CONCEPT OF RELIGION IS BOGUS, WHEN MAN DOESNT FIND ANSWERS TO HIS QUESTIONS HE ATTRIBUTES THEM TO GOD, he continued by adding that ALMOST ALL CONFLICTS TODAY ARE DUE TO RELIGION AND AN ATHEIST SOCIETY CAN ONLY LEAD TO EQUALITY AMONG HUMANS. whats your take on this issue? . THE TOPIC IS HOT BUT LETS DISCUSS IT IN A CIVILIZED MANNER, PLEASE REFRAIN FROM FLAMING AND ACCEPT CRITICISM IN GOOD SENSE.

Organized religion played an important role in uniting people in prehistoric period and ancient history. But when religions started propagating their ideas outside their boundaries, problem started. In todays world, religion is the biggest scam and a major factor holding back human development and the civilization.

Religion served to instill a sense of oneness ,comradeship , discipline and a rudimentary system of justice & law and order in a time when there was none.

Unfortunately with time we began to impose ours on others feeling like most humans do that ' what I have is both better than yours ' and therefore I am right & you obviously have to be wrong.

We have become so full of ourselves that we have no room for others little realising that if some feels differently he is not against you.

God is quite like the water we draw from our wells. It is the same for all but we like to call it ' my well' & therefore 'my god ( read religion) is better than yours !

The ans to the Q posed depends on how fundamental / hardline we are in our views.

Why we should believe in God only for scientific reasons. I mean we believe in love although we cannot prove love with science. peoples can also believe in God for spiritual and emotional reasons. Peoples do big mistake when they confuse faith with science. For example if science prove God then do you need to believe in God after his existence get proved lol Its our test in life that whether we believe in words of God without any solid scientific evidence. There will be no need to show trust in words of God in presence of all solid evidences.

To answer your actual question yes same belief unite us together but peoples have difference of opinions even if they share same beliefs. Atheism is also a belief and they also have difference of opinions on different matters. many conflicts are there because of political reasons more than religious.

It gets skewed when it transgresses in the temporal realm.

And it is chaotic when it is hijacked by so called scholars, experts and other self appointed 'defenders of the Faith'.
