Univs teaching R & Mb is nothing new and quite common. There are hundreds, in many cases, thousands of courses offered in major Univs and classics are quite common. What is so special about this course?

Frankly these epics are almost as foreign to most Indians as they are to foreigners. Ironically, while in most cases tv and cinematization usually damage the original work, in this case they seem to have rekindled interest among Indians which is probably a good thing.

There are almost no limits to the lessons one can take from R & Mb. I recall an IIM professor analyzing decisioning and management styles of Rama and Krishna. It was a fascinating hour and a half.

And then there was the half day lazy summar discussion on ethical dliemnas and Vidhura's logic.

As one matures and start seeing beyond strategy and ethics suddenly the interpretations by such stalwarts as Rajaji start making sense.

So a man reading a Ramayana will find "faults" with Rama over the treatment of Sita.

A man reading Bhagvat gita will find 'faults' in the Varna system it talks about.

Without context , even the best of philosophies become a caricature of its true self.

This is the real problem in such epics being taught in alien environment like christian universities. (Though they would like to claim they are not christian)

An Indian who grows up in a dharmic environment and society where many aspects of dharma is absorbed via social ad cultural means, tend to have a better understanding, but they are still susceptible to propaganda.
