Harvard Professor on Cousin Marriages, Kinship and Democracy in Pakistan

what evidence do you have to support your statement?

Europeans became wealthy due to slavery and stolen wealth from country countries and then exploitation of poor immigrants.

The evidence can be found in how Pakistani elections are won or lost based on biradris' support for particular candidates.

Winners, often called "electables" then patronize particular biradris for their political support.

The patronage is doled out in the form of government jobs & contracts to supporters regardless of merit.

nterestingly the era you are describing is when cousin marriages were common in Europe and less so in the Muslim world.

And which metric are you using to determine that the Muslim world practiced it less frequently back then?

.
Then how did Korea, Japan, Singapore become wealthy? They are not Europeans lol.
All these countries had European investments. Japan and Singapore after world war 2 and Korea after Korean war.

.
Europe too practiced cousin marriages more commonly until relatively recently. The Queen of England and her husband are cousin, Darwin and Einstein married their cousins.

The problem is not cousin marriages up to a point, but a weak state and what people do to insulate themselves from that weak state. If the state is stronger and more reliable, people can be independent from their families. As the economic situation of many families declines in the World and particularly the west, you see the return to multigenerational housing.

In the US the eugenics movement about a 100 years ago heavily propagandized against cousin marriages and with US influence spread throughout the World over the following decades, it was seen as the more “civilized” thing to do.
