Harvard professor among three charged with lying about Chinese government ties

This is not about democracy or freedom or being rich. It is about the opportunities vs talent.

It's nothing if you only have talent but not opportunities, but on the other hand, talent is not a pre-requisite if you have a whole street of talent lining up in the street.

US is probably one of the few country that allow civilian to participate on Military or related research, if you were to do it in China, you would need to have a military background. That's what open knowledge is about. And this is something China do not have.
Policy is not an issue either. When your science and technology get to a certain level, policy would be revised to fit for it. Again, it's "Matthew Effect". China is a later comer in science. Which gives China big disadvantage.

But then the Policy has not change, I am not sure whether or not Chinses Science or Technology is at "Certain Level" compare to the west, but if you look at the research menu offer from Chinese University vs Western University, you would know how big is the different. I know, because I have compare both before I come to Australia for my Post Grad.

As I said before, it's a mutual benefit thing.

Have you done any research work for any project or University?

If you do, you will know the benefit is mutual, you also learn from research and there are some breakthrough you cannot access them in China in the first place.

Before you ask "if these Chinese Researcher return to China" You need to ask why they go to America to do the research in the first place? And trust me, for some research position in the US, other people will laugh out very loud if these Chinese Researcher do indeed return home, because that will open a door to them for the spot.
I was just telling the illiterate vn refugee about the fact that Chinese students/scholars are the backbone of any university and research institution in the US... If you have ever done your education in an university, you will know the professor's responsibility is basically to get the money/funds ready...Majority of them do not go much further into the details of research...
If Chinese leave, sure, some will be happy... But you know what? Why at the first place those professors prefer Chinese students over others? Because they know Chinese students are more capable... Not mean to be racist, but just like Blacks are more capable in athlete, no one can beat them on running track... Same for Chinese in the field of research..

I don't think professor prefer Chinese student. The thing is, there are A LOT of Chinese student to choose from at any research team, so every left or right, you will see a Chinese on your team. And mostly because Chinese flooded the field in Engineering and Pure Science. (I once saw a 100 name application on a Math Program, 60 of those are Chinese name)

While I do think there are some preferential in some field, like Mathematic Principle would prefer Russian and Chinese or Historical research would prefer European or ICT would prefer indian. But whether or not Chinese student are more capable than other? I would not say it is, well, at least depends on which field you are talking about? In my field, there aren't many Chinese in my course (which is applied economic and financial field), a lot of Middle Eastern people though.

You still believe China is far behind of west in science? The fact is China is only next to US. Check this video. I hope you understand Mandarin.

I did not say China is "FAR" behind of west in Science. I said I am not sure whether or not Chinses Science or Technology is at "Certain Level" compare to the west. I don't really know how you get from what I say to what you say?

And I don't think his way to measure "the output" are good benchmark...

No preferential over Chinese students??? Let me tell you one fact: for PHD and MS, majority of students have full scholarship/fellowship/financial aid. Why should American government fund those students from its rival country China instead of giving those opportunities to its own people?? Think about it.
Middle eastern people... most of them major in petroleum related programs and are funded by those oil people..

Most scholarship are not funded by government. In Australia, me as an oversea student would not have access to 90% of Governmental Scholarship, most scholarship are either college based or company based. Majority of those are Chinese own scholarship (like sponsorship from a Chinese company). Local government always favour local student.

I don't think you know how Post Graduate course in the West work...…..

You have no ideal about American universities... Majority of research funds are from the government and professors use these funds to pay for the students working for them. These money can either from NSF, and various government departments...

Are you talking about research fund or scholarship?

Research fund was granted by project, they don't care who that money goes to, it goes into the team that did the research, it could be all Chinese team or all Lebanese team...

Pls have respect, you are on a Pakistan forum not chinese nationalist club!

If you are the backbone where is your contribution to real US business? Why I hardly see any chinese speakers on the forums such as Cisco live?

.
None.

A lot.

Bottom line is that you guys exaggerate your impact on US technology sector.

Lol I graduated from a Chinese Univeristy in 2009 . Let me tell you at that time they had propulsion technology that was 10 years ahead. They are way ahead than you can imagine.

Are you talking about research fund or scholarship?
All of them. If you are a graduate student, you work either as a TA (teaching assistant) or RA (research assistant) or both at different time period... Majority of graduate students work as RA during their study...In the case of RA, your money are from your professor's research funds which mostly comes from the government, small portion are from companies. If you are excellent in academic performance, you could get fellowship which a lot of them again comes from the government. For TA money, they are from various sources, but portion of them are also from the government.

.
That's because the aforementioned open knowledge. China have what we called a "Prescribed" knowledge, which mean you learn them by basically studying. On the other hand, The west focus on applied knowledge. Basically you research one thing and you will unlock a whole bunch of stuff.

The research prospect in China is not nearly as good as in the west, that is why most Chinese Researcher rather go to the west and preform the research there, but not staying in China.
Knowledge?

our chinese friends think too high of themselves.

they copy western stuffs whenever there is an opportunity.

when Germany introduced electric scooters last years, you should observe mass of chinese nationals that stood around electric scooters, making photos, measuring the verhicle.

I would not be surprised if I see the same scooter copy in China for half of the price.
