Happy Men's Day, guys!
Few of us still argue in our little corners why do we need a particular day to celebrate, say, womanhood, fatherhood, motherhood, friendship, love, when these are very much an essential part of our lives?
But every day is 'some' day, when gift galleries, shopping malls, hoardings, advertisements, text messages, phone calls, greeting cards, emails, videos, social networking websites, friends, friends of friends, colleagues... all scream 'Happy xyz Day!!' at you so often that you can't ignore.
Now, you've got to remind your mom how special she is first Sunday of every May, exchange friendship bands on Friendship Day... say the three words to your boyfriend/girlfriend on V-Day, and pay a tribute to all the women in the world on International Women's Day.
But then, as Vidya Balan asked when Women's Day was approaching, "I don't mean to sound sexist or feminist, but why don't we celebrate Men's Day too?" Men's Day exists, but, err... most of us, don't give a damn. No discount coupons, shopping offers, posters or ads! Even the online pages dedicated to this day are lesser, and have less members.
Says Kushant Agarwal, 25, who had not heard of this day, "Of course, we don't know. Most of the days we are 'told about' are those which are saleable. One doesn't have much to sell for men this day. Normally, one wouldn't get teddy bears, greeting cards, pink roses, etc for men, hence the day is not saleable."
Some claim that the world is bending way too much towards the ladies. "I don't mean to offend anyone, but, anything related to the cause of women gets more attention than anything else. So what if women murder their husbands, and are given a special coach in the metro.
We cannot slap them back when they do, and of course, stand up for them on a day dedicated to them," rues Bharat Gogia, 29. "Even a film based on the life of a woman not to forget every TV serial today runs on female protagonists is so overhyped, as if it's something really great on earth. Why will the society shift its focus?" asks Amanpreet Singh, 31, sarcastically.
But many are ready to laugh it off, than bemoan. "On this day, let us salute all the men who make it difficult for girls to step out of their homes, keep their wives suspecting that they're having an affair when they are late, party so hard that they forget...'
It's better we don't have a day for us, it would remind people of all the mischief men do, girlfriend phir se ghumaane ke liye bolegi, woh alag!" jokes Amit Jha, 21.
Alright, today is another day, then. The world doesn't treat both the sexes equally, did they say, eh?
