Police recovered the handcuffed body of a BNP leader of Dhaka city unit from Kushtia Saturday night nearly three and a half hours after he was allegedly picked up by 'law enforcers' from Jhenidah.
The deceased, Rafiqul Islam Mazumdar, 39, was the general secretary of BNP Dhaka City Corporation Ward No. 56, reports our Kushtia correspondent.
He was also vice-president of Bangabazar Super Market in Dhaka and a resident of Shanir Akhara.
Rafiqul started for Savar from his Dhaka residence Friday morning on business purpose from where he went to his in-laws house at Anandanagar village in Shailkupa upazila of Jhenidah.
Lipi Khatun, mother-in-law of Rafiqul, said a group of seven people came to the house by a microbus around 7:30pm Saturday and introduced themselves as the members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab).
They all were armed and wearing Rab uniforms, Lipi said.
The people handcuffed Rafiqul and picked him up within 15 minutes, she said.
They asked us to contact with Rab-6 office in Jhenidah, said Abu Sayeed, brother-in-law of Rafiqul.
The microbus that carried the seven-member group had a sticker of Rab-6 pasted on it, Sayeed said.
There was no trace of Rafiqul since then, he said.
We contacted with Rab-6 office repeatedly in the evening but Rab officials told us that they were not aware of the incident, said Abu Sayeed.
Being informed by the family members, a team of Jhenidah Sadar Police Station led by Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdul Bari visited Rafiqul's in-law's house around 9:30pm. We asked them (family member) to lodge a GD (General Dairy) in this connection but they did not file it, the OC said.
Informed by locals, police recovered the body of Rafiqul from Adabaria-Monohordia field in Kumarkhali upazila of Kushtia, 20 kilometres off the in-laws house, around 11:00pm, said Ali Newaz, the OC of local police station.
Rafiqul was strangled by his scarf (Maflar) and few injury marks were also found in his face and head, the OC said.
The dead body was sent to Kushtia General Hospital for autopsy.
Hamidul Haq, squadron leader and also camp in-charge of Rab-6 in Jhenidah, said, "Rafiqul's in-laws contacted with us in the evening but we confirmed them that Rab-6 did not pick up Rafiqul."
We came to know about the body around 11:00pm, rushed to the spot and identified it as Rafiqul," Abu Sayeed said.
A police team led by Additional Superintendent of Police in Kushtia Zoynul Abedin also visited the spot.
The handcuff that used to pick up Rafiqul inscribed 'police'. But we are not sure what actually happened as such type of handcuff is available in the market. Investigation is on, Zoynal told.
Police suspected that the killers might have followed Rafiqul and took the opportunity of his staying outside Dhaka. He might have been killed following previous enmity in the capital, Zoynul said.
