Hamas to rely on guerrilla tactics against Israel

GAZA CITY: Hamas has thousands of fighters ready to take on Israel and has upgraded its arsenal, experts say. But the war launched by Israel in Gaza will be the supreme test of the Islamist movement that has ruled the territory since June 2007.
Hamas picked up a stockpile of US-made small weapons and ammunition left by the rival Fatah group of Palestinian Authority president Mahmud Abbas when it was routed in a battle for control of Gaza in 2007, according to a report on Hamas prepared for a western nation.
The diplomatic report and the Washington Institute for Near East Policy said the weapons allowed Hamas to upgrade its arsenal and strengthen its control of the enclave of 1.5 million people.
The Washington Institute called it a ‘military bonanza.’ Hamas has also separately acquired anti-tank missiles and learned from Hezbollah's approach during its 2006 war with Israel in southern Lebanon — mining roads and resorting to guerrilla tactics.
Its main weapon against Israel, however, has been the use of Qassam and Chinese-made Grad rockets.
Israel says thousands have been fired into its territory since Hamas took over —and that is why it had to send troops into Gaza.
Even since Israel launched air strikes against Gaza on December 27 to silence the rockets, more than 500 have been fired towards southern Israel, hitting towns such Ashdod, 30 kilometres from the border, and Ashkelon, 13 kilometres north of Gaza.
Shin Beth security service chief, Yuval Diskin, told the Israeli cabinet this week that Hamas now has rockets with a range of 40 kilometers, capable of reaching Ashdod and Beersheva, Israeli media reported.
The Israeli military believes the components used to build hundreds of rockets were smuggled into Gaza through tunnels under the border with Egypt — scores of which were hit in the Israeli air strikes.
But the Israeli military has still warned the public that Hamas may increase the number of rockets fired in coming days.
Hamas can count on about 13,000 fighters, according to Israeli experts, with a hard core of about 1,000 in its Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, which they say have been trained to a level similar to Lebanon's Hezbollah militia.
Efraim Inbar, director of the Begin-Sadat Center for Strategic Studies at Bar-Ilan University, said that ‘Hamas forces have been trained in Iran and by Hezbollah abroad. They are well organised but they still haven't faced a real test.’
Israel's last massive offensive in Gaza, triggered after militants seized an Israeli soldier in a cross-border raid in June 2006, killed more than 400 Palestinians and just three Israeli soldiers.
But Inbar said Israel would have to face intense guerrilla warfare with roadside bombs and other booby traps.
He predicted dozens of Israeli soldiers would die in the campaign — though three or four Hamas fighters would die for each Israeli.
Reserve major general Yaacov Amidror too said there could be a much higher toll, on both sides.
‘The army will have to go in with much more force. The price will be paid by Gaza's local population because Israel is preparing for war against a growing force that has sophisticated weapons and is well entrenched,’ Amidror told AFP.

HAMAS FIRE LONG RANGE CHAINES MADE ROCKETS ON ISRAEL:yahoo:

Hamas fired 60 rockets at Israel today -- another bombardment in an aerial assault that's totaled 6,300 rockets and mortars since Israeli forces left the Gaza Strip in August, 2005. But today's weapons were different. These weren't short-range, home-made Qassam rockets that make up the bulk of Hamas' arsenal. Nor were they the longer-flying 122 mm Grad rockets, designed by the Soviets and made in Iran. Some of today's rockets flew an alarming 22 miles, hitting an empty school house in Beersheva, the unofficial capital of the Negev Desert region. And they were made in China.

The Israel military says that these Chinese rockets not only fly twice as far as the Grads, and four times further than the Qassams. They can "potentially cause much greater damage," too -- with "metal pallets that can spread out across a radius of up to 100 meters from the point of impact," according to YnetNews.

Israeli officials didn't specify which model of Chinese rocket is being used. But it's "most likely the Chinese WS-1E 122mm rocket," the well-sourced Defense Update notes. "These artillery rocket systems are employed by the People's Republic of China Army and were widely exported to third world countries.

Hamas is being foolish.

Causing so much pain to the Palestinians so that they can cause some pin pricks to the Israelis!

Even if Hamas does nothing , in the long term Israels going to do the same to them that they are doing now.

They cant stand the sight of Palestinians, they want to finish them.

Too bad the Israeli school was empty at the time the rocket struck, see how the Israelis would feel if some Israeli children had died instead of Palestinian children all the time, perhaps THEN(I doubt), would they realize what horror the Palestinians have to go through right now.

May be you are right.

But how does doing this benefit the Palestinians in any way? It only helps the Israelis paint the Palestinians as terrorists.

In whole islamic history muslim army always defeated larger and stronger army.Read history of wars eg. badar, khandak, mouta, qudsia, hunain, war of spain,Afghan- Russia,Israel-Hizbullah etc.

In this wars it is expected that israel will face tough resistance from Hamas and may be this war convereted into long term gurrila war .

It would just make the Israelis hit harder. Personally I don't see what everyone is worked up about, Hamas started this fighting and Israel responded with overwhelming force. Yes it is sad that civilians are being killed but it was Israeli civilians being targeted that started it off.

Put this way if a country or group of people were targeting and trying to kill you, your families and friends not to mention wanting to wipe you out wouldn't you strike back?

In this case Arabs enjoy a 50-100 times numerical superiority over the Israelis in most measures! The Muslims as a whole enjoy more than 200 times numerical superiority over Israel and still seem to be managing to lose.

Hamas does not equal Hezbollah/Party of God (POG).

Different battle circumstances altogether and almost certainly a different Israeli army. We shall see.

A true evaluation, however, will require knowing success against objectives-not the perceptions of armchair strategists half a globe away. I'm uncertain what the specific mission objectives would be and the long-term objectives too.

Were it myself, I'd not enter Gaza unless bent upon dismantling HAMAS altogether. We'll see what the goals of the Israeli government are over the next few weeks.

Only if they decide to get united against Israel we will not see such massive killings of innocent Palestinians at the hands of brutal Israel with active support from US for this mass murder of humanity. No wonder why they hate Americans.

The only goal Israel seems to have to kill small childern and armless innocent Palestinians to pressurize Hamas but barbaric Israelis and their terrorist ally America is over-looking the end result of this mass murder of innocent which is More Haterd for Israel and US.

I think you forget or don't know what happened in 1947 and 1967. Several Arab states each much bigger than Israel combined to throw the Jews to the sea. What happened then? Why would it be any different now?

As one Pakistani commentator put it, zero + zero + zero still equal zero!

I think Israel is the one to be blamed.. I dont understand how the Isareli people could sleep knowing that millions of people are living in refuge camp across the border and they are happily living even within the home, built by Palestinians.. I cant do that...
I dont blame Hitlers.....
