HAL to roll out light helicopters


Next in line to fly out of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) hangars will be a light utility helicopter (LUH) that has been cleared by the government a couple of days ago. HAL chairman Ashok K Baweja told reporters on Thursday, the LUH was under development for the last ten months and was expected to make its first flight in mid-August, hopefully to coincide with Independence Day.
In the aviation major’s first major export order, the five advanced light helicopter Dhruvs will be handed over to the Ecuadorian air force chief on Friday. Another two will be
handed over in a few months, with provision to send two more. Along with the ALH, HAL is setting up a base in Quito, Ecuador, to support the sale and also to address other export markets in the South American region.
HAL also had plans in the unmanned aerial vehicle area with Aeronautical Development Establishment, said Baweja, adding one such vehicle was under development for export

India will supply 'Dhruv' Advanced Light Helicopter to Mauritius, the second country after Equador to get the multi-role, multi-mission new generation chopper.

The helicopter, built by state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, is likely to be handed over this month to Mauritius for use by its police, officials said here.

The state-of-the-art helicopter is being supplied under an inter-governmental MoU concluded last week. The chopper, which costs around seven million USD, is being supplied under a USD 100 million line of credit extended by India to Mauritius over three years ago, they said.

Equador became the first country to acquire Dhruv helicopters last month when it signed a contract for seven choppers for its Air Force.

The armed version of Dhruv can be fitted with rockets and a 20 mm gun. Dhruv also has a variant which is equipped with 'fire and forget' air-to-air missiles and 70 mm rockets that can be fired in direct and indirect mode.

Dhruv won the Equadorian contract, outperforming rival machines from from global majors like Eurocopter, mainly due to its lower price tag.

Equador already got five helicopters and the remaining two will be handed over in six months.

To ensure that Equador has no problem in maintaining the Dhruv fleet, HAL is posting a team of engineers in that country for the warranty period of two years.

Carrying all necessary tools required for maintenance, the team of engineers will train the Equadorian Air Force to maintain the choppers in future.

More Latin American countries, including Columbia and Chile are considering to buy Dhruv choppers.

I think this is a big bonus for India, they've done well and it seems that interests in this chopper will increase in more nations due to it's effectiveness and it's low price tag at the same time, it's very attractive to get these machines.

Mauritius chooses Dhruv

On March 24, a team of four pilots from Mauritius will arrive in Bangalore to begin month-long training on the ALH Dhruv. HAL signed a contract with the Mauritian government on February 27 for the sale of one civilian and VVIP transport variant of the helicopter. The country may buy upto two more in the near future sources say. This of course takes the total number of exported Dhruvs to seven (not counting the lease to Israel and the gifts to Nepal). This is a single chopper deal, but it's still something. Good going. HAL is also in talks with Suriname for the sale of upto three Dhruvs.

Dhruv is probably one of the finest achievements from HAL. They've basically taken Bell Jet-ranger scout's design and beefed it up with the capabilities of a Bell-412. Which in return came out with shinning results! Congratulations :tup:

They seem to be of different designs.

Bell Jet-Ranger is a single engine chopper, 412 is double engined hence not comparable. (Jet ranger was preceded by 407, 412 came from the 212). The single engined line is the one from the original Vietnam war Huey.

412 and Dhruv are comparable, but Dhruv has slighly more powerful engine (The HAL-Turbomeca Shakti) , is shorter and lighter. More importantly they have different service ceilings, differing by about 500 metres indicating aerodynamic and engine differences.

The tail assembly, doors, nose and overall shape is also visibly different. Also look at the difference in construction - All Bells have molded metal sheets placed over each other and riveted outside. There is almost no panel gap due to this, but if it gets dented would be a pain to take apart.
Dhruv is built with limited folded metal and simple riveting (though they seem to have tons of different sizes of rivets). Simpler construction and easier to repair.
If there were any copying going on, the panels and dies would be the first suspect, so I don't think there was any.

The IR suppressor shall reduce the outer threat boundary from IGLA class of

the design of the system. It is preferable to avoid ejection of engine hot
gases below and to the sides of the helicopter.

DHRUV, A STAR IN ECUADOR. ECUADOR ARMY, NAVY WANT IT TOO IN THEIR FLEET

Ecuador/Bangalore: Opening a new chapter in an unknown land. This
was how it felt when a team of 10 dedicated personnel from HAL
Helicopter MRO Division landed in Ecuador two months back.
Thanks to the efforts of these men,the first batch of five Advanced
Light Helicopters is now etching its signature on the Ecuadorian
skies. The team had left for Ecuador in order to provide maintenance
and service support and to cater to the repair activities on the helicopters. The ALH has been well received by the Ecuadorian Air Force. The machine has proved its mettle. Ecuadorian officials are happy about its features, technology and performance. The Air Force is using the ALHs for multi-role and high altitude operations, said Mr R
Narayanan, Deputy General Manager, Ecuador, who is leading
the team at Ecuador. The Dhruvs are positioned in
Guayaquil Air Force base and are undergoing customer acceptance
trials, which are being personally monitored by a team of five senior
officers of the Ecuador Air Force. The demonstration on the underslung load capacity of 1.5 tons and rescue load capacity of 250 kg has already been given to the team.
The high altitude trials are planned in Quito and Latagunga in the
coming days. Adds Mr Narayanan, “On the training front, the basic conversion training has been imparted to four Ecuadorian pilots, and further intensive training for the team of 16 Ecuadorian pilots is planned in the next six months by a team of HAL pilots.”

ALH for Army and Navy too:

Ecuadorian President Mr Rafael Correa, who visited the base, had a
close look at the ALH. During his visit, the President was keen to
learn about the technical capabilities of the machine and was
impressed by its performance,maintainability and agility.
Besides the President, senior officers from Army and Air Force also
visited the base. Thanks to the excellent performance
of the ALH, the Ecuadorian Army and Navy too are planning
to add ALHs to their fleets, adds Narayanan.
He adds that the future appears to be bright for HAL in this particular
part of the world. HAL plans to establish bay servicing facilities at Ecuador and to further explore business in the South American Market. Helicopter MRO Division shall spare no efforts to support their
fleet and keep the HAL flag flying high in Ecuador.

ONE FOR THE PRESIDENT:

Two of the helicopters will be used to protect the Northern Frontier and will
be based in Lago Agrio and Esmeraldas. Two others will be deployed at the Taura and Manta base and the fifth will be earmarked for President Rafael Correa’s use.
A group of Indian pilots will be in charge of the operative training, and will
train the members of the Ecuadorian delegation who stayed in India for two
months to participate in workshops to get to know the new helicopters.
Meanwhile, the tech training of the Ecuadorian Air Force (FAE) personnel
will be carried out by a delegation of 10 HAL technicians, who will be in the
country for two years.
