Chief of the Defence Staff General Sir Nick Carter giving evidence to the House of Commons Defence Committee Credit: PA

Half of the UK population are now so unhealthy they are unable to pass initial Army selection, the chief of defence staff has said.

Giving evidence to MPs at the Commons Defence Committee, General Sir Nick Carter said Army recruiters are facing “a very difficult market” in recruiting people healthy enough to enlist.

His comments come after the committee was told in October that the Army currently has 77,000 fully trained troops compared with a target of 82,500.

Gen Carter, who took up the post of chief of the defence staff six months ago, told the committee that “50 per cent of 17-35 year olds are not healthy enough to get through the selection process.”

He also admitted that the British Army shares a large part of the blame for its recruitment failings alongside outsourcing giant Capita and that some "appalling lessons" have been learned.

Capita were controversially awarded the contract for Army recruitment in 2012. In October this year, the Ministry of Defence disclosed that Capita managed to bring in fewer than one in 10 of the recruits needed for 2018-19 in the first quarter of the year.

Asked by Conservative former defence minister Mark Francois whether the recruitment and manning shortfalls are entirely the fault of Capita, Gen Carter said they are not.

"From its inception in 2012, there is no doubt that the Army shares a large part of the blame as well, and it has taken a while to get it back on track," Gen Carter told the committee.

"To be clear, Capita's bid when they competed for this contract was ambitious and I think it was overly ambitious and that would be their fault”, he added.

Gen Carter also conceded three or four "big errors" were made from the side of the military in the process, including making the contract too complicated and outsourcing the notion of a recruiting sergeant.

He said: "If someone is making a decision to join the Army, or for that matter the other two services (the RAF and Royal Navy), they need to see a role model in the process at the front door and that was outsourced.

"The second thing that was outsourced, which was definitely a mistake, was the ability to nurture candidates through the process from application to enlistment - and that was something that could not be handled by an anonymous call centre - which was the plan."

A lot of people are not applying as well hence is why anyone from the Common Wealth can now apply to join the British Army.

The government spends a lot of money training however people decide to leave after graduating. My GCSE maths teacher was a former Eurofighter pilot, he left the air force and came into teaching.

This is an issue among all the first world countries and the culprits are the fast food chains pumping out all these processed food.
Its surprise because UK still has youth which involve in physical activities whether its playing football, gym, cycling, walking etc

I bet UK army don't give as much incentive( secure long career, medical insurance, butlers, army guest houses, army clubs, gymnasiums, swimming pools, riding clubs, sports clubs, subsidised education for children etc) to people as Pakistan army. I have seen many people joining army in Pakistan for hefty salary an protocol which officer get at very young age . Our army has stake in public sectors, fertilizer, power , mining, oil&gas so bright future head for army officers even after retirement

.
Have you seen the crap they put in our food in uk. It all tin food no time to cook real food and gmo. yummy. Go to super market no real food maybe a few. all sugar.
The only thing i can think that is quite healthy is oats.

I look at my weak *** cousins that were actually born in Glasgow. All they eat is chips and pizza and have body frame of malnourished bhartis. I tried offering them bakra karhai once and they were like how can you eat that? It has so many bones, we might injure our mouth.

It’s subjective; once you’re in the army there are no insensitives however the salary is good. The army tends to target young people after college, for example the army is willing to pay your university fees if you signup to join them after graduating. Plus you get £20,000 for signing up.

Somewhere ordinary classes in birtian still thinks they are wrong to meddle into other people affairs. The memory of helmand and Iraq and the British troops murdered there still haunt them.
They consider their government and generals forcefully sending them to unknown terrorities to die.
There has been a debate in the past and now a common britisher dont want to waste his life.
Some of them come back really scarred.
They remember the children and people they have killed or their friends killed.
All for a fake war by Tony Blair in Iraq.
My cousin in royal navy was an engineer. He was on several ships that used to bring free oil from Iraq to Britain.
So they feel the pain really bad .
But due to artificial intelligence they would find a way.

In their case they always target criminals youth, or the youth suffering from emotions and stuff. Ones that have failed at everything are recruited by their army..

lolz my friend told me he wanted to join army in the 90s. The recruiter asked him how do you feel about going to fight in Muslim countries and killing muslims.
He didnt join after that. josh thora hu gaya.

Pakistan armyy establishment is abit elitist and it is said that they only allow their kids to go forward.

The real problem is the economy. For every job in the services there is 99 other that offer the same or nearly the same pay but you don't have to risk your life or be owned by the state 24/7.

.
They can handle remote controls and video game joy sticks, making them fit enough tbh...
