HAL Inks Two Major Pacts
Aerospace major Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) has signed a technology transfer agreement with Sagem (Safran) of France, for manufacture and maintenance of the latter’s SIGMA 95 laser gyro-navigation system in India.Developed by Sagem for fixed and rotary-wing combat aircraft, SIGMA 95 is an autonomous, hybrid laser gyro inertial/GPS-Glonass navigation system. It is capable of withstanding severe environments and gives military aircraft a high degree of navigation precision and operational flexibility, even in areas without GPS signals.According to the agreement, HAL will be able to produce SIGMA 95 units for the IAF and also provide frontline maintenance. Sagem has further consolidated its partnership with the Indian aerospace industry through this agreement. Several combat aircraft deployed by the Indian Air Force and the Navy, including the Hawk, Jaguar, Tejas, MiG-29, MiG-27 and Su-30 are already fitted with Sagem’s navigation systems.
Tie-Up With IIT-M
As part of its efforts to boost industry-academia synergy, HAL on Friday signed a memorandum of understanding with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras.
The MoU was signed by HAL chairman T Suvarna Raju and Prof R Nagarajan, dean, International and Alumni Relations, IIT-M. Raju said HAL will benefit greatly by establishing a Chair at the institute. “We have the knowledge and potential for research. We have already done a lot of research and, through such partnerships, we will take steps to strengthen research activities,” he said.
