Despite the best efforts of the Indian government to strengthen its domestic defence production capabilities, the state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) seems destinedto fail in every project with international collaboration, it has embarked on so far. :lol:

Soon after President Pratibha Patil undertook a much-publicised flight in a combat aircraft, a Sukhoi-30 MKI jet of the c (IAF) crashed near Jethagaon in Jaisalmer while returning from a regular training mission. This was the second of India’s most advanced fighter jet in less than eight months.

According to sources, the aircraft that crashed was a new machine that had recently been rolled out by HAL and was part of an upcoming squadron in Pune. This is the second crash of a Sukhoi-30 MKI fighter after a fatal accident on April 30 in which an officer lost his life. The fleet was grounded for close to a month after the April crash and sources said that the fighters are likely to stay on the ground till investigators give a go ahead. However they were flying again.

Earlier this year, in July, defence minister AK Antony had said that while there are no serious maintenance problems with the aircraft, the fleet was grounded for three weeks to ascertain the cause of the crash. He also revealed that the reason for the crash was a “likely failure of the fly-by-wire system”.



Antony had maintained that, “The Su-30 is one of the most advanced jets in the world. The IAF is very happy with it. The IAF feels it is one of the best in the world.” The Su-30 was inducted in 1996 and the IAF fleet currently comprises 98 aircraft. This will rise to 230 by 2015, Antony said. The IAF operates three squadrons (approximately 55 aircraft) of the jet; some were bought in flyaway condition from its Russian manufacturer while state-owned HAL manufactured the others under licence.

The state-owned aerospace major HAL has sharply ramped up its manufacturing capacities and is set to deliver 350 combat jets, trainers and helicopters worth Rs500 billion to the Indian armed forces by 2012. HAL, from its plants at Bangalore, Nashik and Koraput, is currently engaged in manufacturing some 100 indigenous Dhruv advanced light helicopters, an almost equal number of Sukhoi Su-30 MKI combat jets under licence from Russia, some 60 Hawk advanced jet trainers under license from Britain and a little over 20 indigenous Tejas light combat jets.


While the IAF is desperately short of aircraft for training its flight cadets, with the entire fleet of basic trainers grounded after a series of crashes, advanced training also suffered equally due to unexpected delays in the manufacture of the Hawk advanced jet trainer (AJT) in India.:smokin:

The surprising fact is that the concerned article concludes that HAL's "global projects hit air pockets" but does not specifically mention the projects it is talking about.

Greater doesnt always mean expansion it also means striving for exicellence or progress:whistle:
And who care about HALs projects most of them turn out to be rubbish no offence look at HALs history dude

Example is ur missiles ur arjunksky with russian german and israeli help ur LCA hope it doesnt FAIL YET ;) UR SU30 with israeli avionics fitted or assembled by HAL trhat as u can see the report crashed or ur several migs that have been crashing not to forget ur DHRUV COPTERS

Right... so you did post "examples" like the Su-30MKI crash. Hmm... so one of the several jets made crashes and you call the entire HAL Su-30MKI project "rubbish". What logic!

One HAL Dhruv crashes in Ecuador... that too because of pilot error and you call the entire HAL Dhruv project "rubbish". What logic!

Got any more "examples" which would display your brilliant logic?

BTW, in comparison, Pakistan Aeronautic Complex's only claim to fame is the JF-17 jointly developed with China. Apparently, the JF-17 is so advanced that the Chinese themselves have not placed a single order for the fighter. Rofl.

if it repeat itself we will try it again and again till it will be a sucess..atleast we are making effort to make things indegenously

Dude most of the missiles devaloped by DRDO are now inducted in to the defense force or ready to be get inducted..and also Arjun is already inducted in Army offcource only a small quantity but as soon as the problems rectified it will be the MBT of Indian armed force and LCA will be with Indian Airforce by 2012..About Su-30 after all these years you only see 2 aircrafts crash landed..tell me any country whose aircrafts not crashed yet?and DHRUV copter crash in Equodor was a pilot error..get your facts straight

This is definately not good omen. Poor build quality is bringing bad name to Russian design technology! :(

If the HAL manufactured MKI crashed, then how in he|| do you say that all MKI's manufactured by HAL will be defective? I forgot that there were a couple F-22 crashes in California........ oh dear these Americans are such amateurs. :usflag:

A few failures do not mean HAL can't get anything right. But it is true, when you are an up-and-coming organization like HAL is, failures in such high numbers and importance is not good for business. That said, I still expect HAL to become a successful defence exporter in the future, just don't expect any overnight successes.

You are obviously new here, because you will find the exact opposite happening most of the time. It seems the lives of certain Indians revolves around poking fun at Pakistan, and claiming how India is much superior to us. There are only a handful of Pakistani members who return the favor, which is good, because that is something called "class".

That not only makes you cheap, but a hypocrite as well. As for the statement, "China copies others, Pakistan copies China", is this taught in Indian schools? it seems every Indian has memorized this line and will try to mask all their failures with it. It's sad, really, because India's "indigenous" programs haven't exactly amazed anybody, least of all your Armed Forces who are stuck with them. Anyway, you haven't said one thing here that was even remotely related to the thread, so I'll leave you alone now.

I am looking for the source for the second statement about the Dhruv crash being pilot error, but I can't find any. Can you please provide it? Also, I believe poster's claim was that the second Su-30MKI crash was not due to pilot error. It was either caused by poor design or build, but either way, it reflects poorly on HAL. This much even the maddest HAL fan will have to admit, losing a $60 Million won't be good for business.

Since, HAL is not maintaining secrecy in their ongoing projects, they are embarrassed when a failure occurred.

And yes, one of my friends comment on Arjun Tank had ensured me that it is not a failure (might be a victim of bureaucracy). He told me that tests conducted by Indian Army on Arjun were much more rigorous than tests conducted on T-90 and even t-90 don't have the endurance to survive in such tests.

HAL is the best friend of Chinese/Pak airfoces.

hundreds of fighters maintained/repaired/built by HAL have crashed during training in the past, you have to give a big thank you to HAL for their contribution to the safety of the region.
