HAL may not meet SU delivery deadline

The Bangalore-based Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) may not be able to deliver the remaining 81 Su-30 MKI fighter planes to Indian Air Force (IAF) within the contract period that ends in 2014-15.

Five years ago, the IAF entered into an agreement with the HAL for the supply of 180 Su-30 MKI by 2014-15. “Out of the total 180 aircraft, 99 aircraft have been delivered till 2010-11,” Defence Minister A K Antony informed the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.

But going by the information shared by Antony, HAL does not seem to be in a position to fulfill its contracted commitment, as its assembly line can produce only 16 aircraft every year.

This means in the remaining four yers, HAL can at best produce 64 aircraft and may require at least another year to deliver the 17 others.

As per the initial contract between IAF and HAL approved by the Cabinet Committee on Security in December 2000, the Su-30 project was to commence from 2004-05 and be completed by 2017-18.

In June 2005, Air Headquarters requested HAL to explore the feasibility of compressing the delivery programme by three years. HAL submitted a proposal envisaging compressed delivery of 140 aircraft within 2014-15, which was approved by the CCS in 2006 .

Antony said his ministry was in the process of procuring six mid-air refullers from the global market. The ministry wants to conclude the contract in two and half years from the date of issuing the tender.

Currently, India has six IL-78 mid-air refullers that have increased the IAF's strategic reach. An earlier defence ministry effort to purchase an European refueller did not fructify.

HAL have let us down again....I think its high time that top managment of HAL should realise value of time before it gets too late....I mean they are already running late in Tejas project and even here they are doing the same late lateef Babu's.....We realy need an Ex Airforce Officer as Future Hal Chairman so that people working in HAL should know that discipline and Time kiss chidiya ka naam hai.....

It is very deangerious that we are betting on a single horse HAL.

India should diversify and allow NAL with some private partner like TATA/Mahindra to manufacture aircrafts.

Like US have Boeing and Lockheed Martin.

HAL is too busy with Rudra, Dhurv, LCH, LCA Tejas, Su 30MKI, FGCA, MMRCA (near future) etc. etc.

Not that I think that there wont be any delay but this Article writer is really naive!! He is calculating the output per year by back calculating!!!
He has not taken into account the expansion of the Nashik unit, or the complete new engine overhaul facility in Orissa!
There is always a trend in the output in manufacturing and the article writer seems to be missing that point!

HAL was originally supposed to make 140 MKI by 2014/15, but now they are given 180 to be produced by 2014/15. As of 2011 they produced 99 MKI and 4 more years left. At current capacity they can produce 16*4 = 64 more aircrafts by 2015. But HAL is coming up with new production line to meet the requirements. Also there would be increase in airrafts per year in future at current facilities.

you can't really blame HAL for this,Indian govt and IAF never give enough support on indigenous aviation industry ,they would rather buy a "superpower" title in a short time

Buying the 'superpower' title not an easy job. China knows it better than anyone else. Without support it is impossible. Recent defeat in face to face election in UN is perfect example. Bully is never gonna a superpower, even if tries to buy. :lol:

Where's the logic in this article? This doesn't take into account the generation of capacity HAL is undertaking and the fact that HAL WILL ramp up production of the MKI this year and onwards. This guy has stumbled on to some figures, done some math and come up with a shortfall but not taken into account the above. As production lines mature, naturally they are going to increase output.

HAL is just a manufacturing giant they cannot design or develop which is why investment is needed along with privatization everything they make comes from DRDO or abroad

Pretty much ranges from ~$50 mil/unit to $80+ mil/unit for UPG, latest MKIs and quite a bit more for "SUPER" MKIs.

lol i searched n found tht its between 32-35 or at max 40 million $ a pop..... no su variant is tht expensive....
