Game of Thrones actor Hafthor Bjornsson has set a world deadlifting record by lifting 501kg (1,104lb).

Bjornsson, who portrayed Ser Gregor "The Mountain" Clegane in the HBO series, broke the record at his gym in his native Iceland.

The strongman lifted the barbell for two seconds, before dropping the weights and roaring in delight.

The event was streamed by sports broadcaster ESPN and filmed for Bjornsson's YouTube channel.

Bjornsson, who is 2.05m tall (6ft 9in), previously won the World's Strongest Man competition in 2018.

Speaking in a "behind-the-scenes" video posted on YouTube, Bjornsson said: "I'm extremely proud, you know. I'm extremely happy.

"It's great - there's nothing better than proving people wrong. So many people didn't believe in me, so many people that said, '501kg is never going to go up'... But I also had a lot of support."

He added: "I feel healthy, I feel good. I'm just absolutely speechless, even though I'm talking a lot now. But I'm excited, super excited - this is huge for me."

The record was previously held by Eddie Hall, a British man who in 2016 became the first man to lift 500 kg.

Amazing superhuman level strength.
The only thing is that it needs to be done officially like Eddie did.

Crazy strength. It's mad how strong some people are out there.

Are you aware of him and Eddie Hall having a potential boxing match? There seemed to be some sort of beef going on between them too for a while.

Yes heard about that. They do hate each other, to be honest Eddie is a very nice guy and Thor can be quite arrogant at times.
Eddie and Thor can be both be seen on Youtube working on pads and sparring. Eddie does move better and has better technique.

.
The amount of strain on the body doesn't look healthy. There is healthy lifting and there is unhealthy lifting. His head is spinning after dropping the weight.

It seems these days everyone famous is trying to get into the boxing ring, from Youtubers to now strongmen. It appears they're all capitalising on this current state of popularity that boxing is going through. Not that I mind, I enjoy the entertainment. I just hope these two don't end up hurting each other. They're very strong specimens.

I could not imagine of a healthy way for a human to lift such large weights. Only thing to do is not lift them. These strongmen put great stress on their bodies, not just when in competition, but everything from their diet and their training. They understand the risks very well. I hold a great deal of respect for them. They aim for difficult goals and push themselves to the limits to achieve them.

Eddie Hall is from Stoke , an hour's drive from Manchester.
And he isn't happy
He says it's a rigged unofficial lift as weights were not officially verified.

I am a big fan of Eddie and been following him since he started participating in Strong man competition.

On Eddie's Insta, he accepted Thor's challenge for a boxing match.Their beef started in 2017 strongman competition in which Thor accused Eddie of cheating and calling the competition rigged

Eddie is shorter than Thor and won't win a boxing match
