Guyana has seized over 2,000 cases of tuna which were labelled 'BUIWICK' instead of 'BRUNSWICK'.
The knockoff product bears a similar label design to the well-known brand Brunswick, however, the exact address of the manufacturer in China was not yet known.
Guyana's Food and Drug Analyst Department said by law, the labelling is considered false, misleading and deceptive, while the label was also found to be inadequate according to the country's food and drug regulations.
Officials have since written to the Commissioner of Customs to suspend the processing of documents for the third party agent, which operates out of the US.
The department added that it intends to notify China's regulatory agency to inform them of the finding as official documentation was allegedly used to facilitate the shipment of falsely labelled tuna to Guyana.
Environmental Officers and Public Health Officers are also to be notified.
Consumers are also being urged to double-check and inspect food labels to ensure they are buying the genuine product.
Some Chinese rice companies were recently the subject of controversy in Nigeria over allegations that plastic rice was found; however Nigerian media later reported that the claims were unfounded.
