Gurkha ordered back to UK after beheading dead Taliban fighter

A Gurkha soldier has been flown back to the UK after hacking the head off a dead Taliban commander with his ceremonial knife to prove the dead man’s identity.
The private, from 1st Battalion, Royal Gurkha Rifles, was involved in a fierce firefight with insurgents in the Babaji area of central Helmand Province when the incident took place earlier this month.
His unit had been told that they were seeking a ‘high value target,’ a Taliban commander, and that they must prove they had killed the right man.

Deadly: A platoon of Gurkhas demonstrate their skill with their kukri knives in a training exercise, after it is revealed that one of their regiment chopped off the head of a Taliban fighter in order to find proof of ID

The Gurkhas had intended to remove the Taliban leader’s body from the battlefield for identification purposes.
But they came under heavy fire as their tried to do so. Military sources said that in the heat of battle, the Gurkha took out his curved kukri knife and beheaded the dead insurgent.
He is understood to have removed the man’s head from the area, leaving the rest of his body on the battlefield.

talk about the Gorkha using his head for evidence! IMHO, excellent thinking on the battlefield by the soldier under fire!

Hope u know 3 gurkhas were shot dead 2 days back.

Those warriors were killed in their sleep.

In this particular case, the soldiers killed the talimoron they were looking for and then in subsequent firefight couldnt drag that bozo's body, so the Gorkha just cut its head off as piece of intel!

They should do more of that!

Im sorry, but ur wrong.... nor were the sleeping as per the news nor the afghan SOLDIER who killed them has been caught hes still on the lose... as off now.... I can provide u the BBC source.

Also nothing big... they BRITISH NEPALESE soldiers might have taken revenge as there is no use of a low rankin average talib fighter.

Also for ur info... talifukers of TTP blow or behead their own comrades when they r dead to avoid the identification.

Gurkhas were in Afghanistan before they came to Afghanistan with NATO forces. So fighting there is no problem for them.

"As such, between the World Wars, the Gurkha regiments fought in the Third Afghan War in 1919 and then participated in numerous campaigns on the North-West Frontier, mainly in Waziristan, where they were employed as garrison troops defending the frontier, keeping the peace amongst the local populace and keeping the lawless and often openly hostile Pathan tribesmen in check. During this time the North-West Frontier was the scene of considerable political and civil unrest and the troops stationed at Razmak, Bannu and Wanna saw an extensive amount of action."

Please do some research on what Wikipedia is before you start posting uneducated responses. Wikipedia is a biased peer edited online encyclopedia. This particular paragraph you posted does not have a credible source to even remotely qualify its validity.

So what is so brave about cutting off the head of a dead fighter on the battlefield? As if the Taliban are asking for a quarter. They ask for none and give none. Quite simple.

Pakistan has fought three wars against the Gurkhas. They are no more or less fierce than the others we have fought against. Most of the time, the talking up and folklore is to boost own morale.

After the wars, silly little stories and nick-names are talked around to spread the aura of invincibility or supposed fierceness. The reality on the battlefield is quite different.

Different places, different times. The problem is the same as that faced by others troops. Gurkhas are no exception. Had they been springing wonders, things would be quite different on the ground.

As far as keeping Pathan tribesmen in check, good luck with that as it never happened. Its not happening now and it certainly did not happen during any of the earlier Afghan expeditions by the British. The Pashtun owns the night, they blend in during the day and when needed, they stand and put on a fight and make the ultimate sacrifice when they need to and on most others, let other take home their dead or wounded.

Firepower and massing of troops only brings temporary respite. Gurkha presence has little bearing on the situation.

hmmm... looks like lots of people ego got hurt.. why r u guys seeing this news from religious perspective? come'on the brave soldiers got rid of some terrorists and we should be happy about it...

not true. It has happened before in the past.ever heard of Hari Singh Nalwa ( a general of Sikh Empire). Here is something that u might find interesting

Sir Henry Griffin called Nalwa the "Murat of the Khalsa". A British newspaper had asserted in the early twentieth century that had Nalwa the resources and the artillery of the British, he would have conquered the East and extended the boundaries of the Sikh Kingdom to include Europe. This most famous of the great Sikh generals participated in the following conquests: Sialkot, Kasur (1807), Multan (1818), Kashmir (1819), Pakhli and Damtaur (1821-2), Peshawar (1834)[17] and finally Jamrud (1837) in the Khyber Hills. He served as the governor of both Kashmir and Peshawar. A coin minted in Kashmir came to be known as the 'Hari Singhee'. The coin is on display in museums.

As is clear from the above article this guy defeated the Pathans in Peshawar,Jamrud etc and extended Sikh empire to these places. So when u say "it has never happened " u r mistaken

Context is misplaced. Had the same been done to a Gurkha or a British trooper, people here would be crying horse about the supposed "cruelty" of the Taliban. Yet when a gun for hire does the same to a Talib, who, all arguments aside, is on home ground and fighting outsiders on his homeland, this action is touted as "coolness"? Its crass and that is what this whole mess is.

Bravery is not limited to the ones you like only. Had the other side not been brave, this war would not be in its 6th year with a constant flow of body bags flying back home all over the world. Respect for bravery goes both ways. Realize that. This vilification of the other side and aggrandizing of your own side does very little to further the understanding of what is really going on out there.

The Pashtuns to this day dominate the areas. They fought the Sikh occupation the same way they fought the British in the earlier 19th century and how they do now in Afghanistan and even in Pakistan today. Its their land. They do not get bogged down in conventional warfare. There tactical defeats mean nothing in the scheme of things because they will harass you till you leave. This is the gist of their doctrine.
