Gulf Automobile Industries Begin Car Production


This Ramadan Gulf Automobile Industries have begun their car manufacturing in Saudi Arabia, using Saudi designed and manufactured Pick ups and Trucks ushering in a new age for Saudi car industry.

At 2013 the company had made plans to manufacture 1000 cars, going up to 6000 cars by 2014 and 30,000 cars a year by 2015.

The company has 60% Saudization rating, with more than 85% of the cars's components locally made.

look in engineering there are levels of what added value is and where the real butter is made

1- design
2- research and development
3- prototyping
4- manufacturing
5- maintenance and improvement

when i come a company comes from out side and puts a manufacturing plant all it is doing is bringing its own ready made designs and using your cheap resources to make a profit . this does not improve nor increase the level of innovation you have in the country .

Gulf Automobile to build pickups in Saudi Arabia

Abu Dhabi-based Gulf Automobile Industry Corp (GAIC) will manufacture the 150-horsepower vehicle in Saudi Arabia through a 375 million Saudi riyal joint venture with a Saudi industrial investor.

Abu Dhabi-based Gulf Automobile Industry Corp (GAIC), the first UAE producer of an indigenously developed double cabin pick-up, will now also manufacture the 150-horsepower vehicle in Saudi Arabia through a 375 million Saudi riyal joint venture with a Saudi industrial investor.

"With the support of the Saudi government, we are setting up a factory in Dammam Industrial City 2, which will have a capacity to produce 15,000 pick-up units annually," Nasser Hamad Al Hajeri, chairman of the Gulf Automobile, told Gulf News in an interview.

"The production at the 109,000 square metre factory will start by the beginning of 2009," he said.

Since the launch of its pick-up in November last year, Gulf Automobile has about 100 of its vehicles on the roads in the UAE and Saudi Arabia at present.

He said the company has orders for 150 units. The customers are from the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Yemen.

"We will deliver 40 units to customers by the end of this month. It will take another two-and-a-half months for us to manufacture the rest," Al Hajeri said.

Its good KSA is moving in to this area of industrialization. Are there plans to also look at the export market? And if someone knows and can answer, why not look at production of an known brand (BMW, Merc, etc) rather than going for a local design?

For example here in SA we have a very well developed car manufacturing industry both for local and export markets and for some big names like Merc, BMW, Toyota, etc but we never really went for a purely local make due to various reasons. I am curious to see the reason behind KSA setting up its own local make vs a well know make.
