A curfew has been imposed in India's western state of Gujarat following violence after a massive rally by the Patel community demanding better access to jobs and education.

A day-long strike called by the community is also being observed. The main city of Ahmedabad is virtually shut down.

Tuesday's rally turned violent when protesters clashed with local people.

Patels make up 20% of the population of Gujarat.

The caste is economically and politically powerful but the protesters say quotas for lower castes put them at a disadvantage.

The rally was addressed by Hardik Patel, a 22-year-old controversial community leader.

Several incidents of violence and rioting were reported from across Ahmedabad late on Tuesday following the detention of Mr Patel, who was later released.

The BBC Hindi's Ankur Jain in Ahmedabad says curfew has been imposed in nine areas of Ahmedabad, as well as in the Surat and Mehsana districts after clashes broke out after Tuesday's meeting, attended by some 300,000 people belonging to the community.

Reports say the security forces used batons to disperse thousands of people. Other protestors reportedly destroyed cars; and stones were thrown as members of the Patel community clashed with people from lower castes.

At least 70 buses were also torched by the protestors.

Our correspondent says the army and paramilitary soldiers have been deployed in Surat and Ahmedabad, and internet services on mobile phones suspended.

Wednesday's strike has shut down schools, businesses and public transport in Ahmedabad and other parts of the state.

"The police have assaulted members of my community and behaved like terrorists. We will carry out our movement peacefully. I am asking my supporters to fast in support of our cause," Mr Patel said in a statement.

Patels control India's thriving diamond cutting and polishing industry and are among the most prosperous businessmen and farmers in Gujarat, the home state of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. .

But they complain that they are denied college places because of affirmative action to ensure those below them in India's complex social structure have access.

And they say they have been affected by a slowdown in small and medium industries in Gujarat which has led to a drying up of employment opportunities.

Patels are now demanding affirmative action and classification as Other Backward Classes (OBCs) so that they are entitled to quotas in state-run education centres and in government jobs.

OBC refers to the castes - in the middle of the Hindu caste hierarchy - who do not face so much exclusion or isolation in society but have been traditionally socially and economically disadvantaged.

Thats a shit load of Patels in that pic mate.. For a long time i thought Patel and Singh were generic surnames for almost all Indians..

Giving reservation to every community that can make a show of strength, will be the best way to phase out reservation. After all, if communities which are in sizeable quantity in a state, like Patels in GJ and Marathas in MH are getting reservations, the ones already enjoying the reservation, might as well compete in general category.

AHMEDABAD: Clashes erupted overnight between police and members of a landowning community demanding government benefits in western India.

Authorities sent paramilitary forces to help restore order Wednesday, as the group's leader called for a strike.

Authorities issued a curfew Tuesday night in at least five cities of Gujarat state, after mobs attacked police officers with stones and sticks and burned government and private vehicles.

Cellphone communications were blocked in the state's main city of Ahmedabad to stop both rumors from spreading and gangs from coordinating their movements against law enforcement.

No casualties have been reported, police said.

The Patidars, also known as the Patel community for the last name they share, are demanding the special status given to many minorities in India, guaranteeing them a share of government jobs and school places.

The Patels, which make up about 20 per cent of Gujarat's 63 million population, say their livelihoods based on seasonal farming have become increasingly difficult amid India's agricultural malaise and rapid economic growth marked by high inflation.

On Tuesday, Patel leaders led a rally attended by 500,000 Patels from across Gujarat.

Later, police detained the group's 22-year-old leader Hardik Patel, prompting members of the community to rampage through cities in Gujarat.

Hardik Patel called for a strike on Wednesday across Gujarat, the state Prime Minister Narendra Modi administered as chief minister for 12 years.

“The agitation will continue until our demands are met,” Patel said. Schools said they would remain closed, but it was unclear how many businesses would follow the strike call during the day.

Modi's successor, Chief Minister Anandiben Patel, urged members of her own community to maintain peace and calm.

The Indian government said it was sending paramilitary forces to help restore order.

Also this whole hullabaloo over reservations is beyond dumb. Less than 1% of jobs created in India annually are in the govt sector where reservations are a factor. Of that 1% too, it is only 0.5% that is affected. Gujratis as a matter of fact are rather averse to govt jobs.
